A Bit About Spring Assisted Knives

Benefits of a Spring Assisted Knife:

  • One-handed opening
  • Easy to keep on hand
  • Legal almost everywhere
  • Sooooo smooooth

First things first. Spring assisted knives are not switchblades.

Now that we have that out of the way, let’s continue. Spring assisted knives first came onto the knife scene in the mid 90’s with innovation from Blackie Collins and Ken Onion, both great iconic knife makers. Ken Onion was the Premier Knife Designer for Kershaw, and they were the first big company to take a gamble on the assisted open style. The knives sold really well, the industry scrambled to catch up, and now there are tons of options and styles to choose from.

Spring assisted knives are great because they make the whole knife experience just a little bit smoother. It’s not always a race to see who can open their knife the fastest (even though with an assisted you would win), but that little extra smoothness just makes for such a great in hand feeling.

Final Say and the Law

For many people, spring assisted knives are considered the best pocket knives. They are a great middle ground between a switchblade and a more traditional knife while still offering all the advantages of a normal pocket knife when it comes to ease of carry and legal concerns. That being said, make sure to check to see if your new spring assisted knife meets local laws.
