I used the Espada XL for my EDC for a few weeks, just for fun, and despite the obvious insanity of pulling a sword out of your pocket, it's possible to do EDC stuff with this knife. It makes fast work of cutting down large cardboard boxes for recycling.

I initially assumed that the tab on the blade spine that catches on the pocket to automagically open the blade would be tricky to do, and even with practice it'd be a bit hit or miss. Nope! Zero learning curve. It just works, and it's my favorite feature. All large folders should open like this. I can lift the knife as I draw it to prevent the blade from deploying, but otherwise, the effect is that of pulling a sword out of your pocket. It's quite an impressive trick. It never failed to make me smile. That trick never got old.

Despite being clownishly large, the self defense potential is definitely there. Heck, the deterrence factor alone is significant. Most potential perpetrators will probably figure that anyone crazy enough to carry this knife this is nobody they want to mess with. You're instantly the craziest guy on your block.

My biggest beef with Cold Steel is the black blade coating that they're calling DLC. It's not like any DLC I've ever seen. It looks and acts like some sort of thin black oxide coating. Within just a few pocket openings, my XL Espada experienced a gritty opening and a long scratch along the curved portion of the blade near the pivot. Apparently a little piece of pocket grit was in there (The XL is so large that this end of the knife rides on the bottom of the pocket). I put some Gun Butter synthetic oil in there and the knife opens and closes without any drag, but I EDC'd a SOG Aegis with a real DLC blade for many years and the blade still looks almost knew, and it was a hard use knife. My Kahr PM9 pistol has been pocket carried every day for over 11 years and the DLC finish looks new once I wipe off the pocket lint. If they can't provide the Black DLC finish that SOG, Kahr and others are using, I wish Cold Steel would offer the Espada with that funky smooth feeling but very textured looking stonewash finish that's on my Cold Steel Voyager XL. It's durable and attractive.

Be sure to watch the Nick Shabazz review of the Espada XL on YouTube (/watch?v=gI9l6xP5hIg). It's very informative and very entertaining.
Huge, well built, bowie

This pocket knife will make everyone look when you pull it out. It has the clip to catch on your pants to open. (I recommend opening it with your pants, or two hands) you really need to watch a video to get the idea of just how big this knife is. With the Tri-Ad Lock this knife won't close. It has two curves in the handle. You can grab the first for precise cuts or back or get more leverage to chop. It actually fits in your pocket of course not much else will with it.
