Description

Description

We've heard the demands for a CPM-M4 Shaman and are excited to deliver this awesome piece with a black DLC blade! This Blade HQ exclusive Spyderco Shaman is the next in line of our sold-out M4 and natural G-10 series! The Shaman is a relatively new offering from Spyderco, and this will be one of the very first exclusive black DLC variations of this new favorite! Limited run that will go quick.

We've tweaked the standard Shaman configuration to create a unique addition to our exclusive Spyderco lineup. The standard blade has been upgraded with a black DLC coated premium CPM-M4 steel, a high-speed steel with excellent toughness and edge retention qualities. The Shaman is a knife that begs to be used, and the toughness of a fantastic tool steel like CPM-M4, compliments this knife extremely well. The standard black G-10 handle has been replaced with translucent green natural G-10 scales. Includes black clip and hardware.

The Spyderco Shaman is a larger, more capable version of the iconic Native design theme. A high saber grind and prominent swedge create excellent edge geometry and a fine-tuned point. Its handle sports ergonomic G-10 scales over skeletonized stainless steel liners to keep the Shaman lightweight and comfortable. Top it off with a high-strength Compression Lock mechanism and a four-position pocket clip, and you have one solid EDC folder.

Features:
  • Built with a Compression Lock for top-notch security during use.
  • Premium CPM-M4 steel provides excellent cutting performance.
  • Contoured natural G-10 scales offer a comfortable and secure grip while keeping carry weight minimal.

The Spyderco Shaman is a EDC manual folder that is proudly made in the USA. Spyderco also wants everybody to know itís made specifically in Golden, Colorado, on Earth. So, if you were confused about its origin, I hope that extra laser etching clears it up for you. Its overall open length is 8Ē and a little over 3 and a half inches of that is a sexy, tactical black, Cerakote covered drop point blade made from CPM M4 super steel. Just saying that gives me the Mufasa shivers! The handle material is ďnaturalĒ jade G-10 and it is lightly textured. Skeletonized steel liners keep the Shaman light and it only weighs around 5.2 ounces.

This Spyderco Shaman is an in house, Spyderco design and has some really cool design details. Of course, the trademarked spidey hole is there. I believe the official trademarke name is the Round Hole but I like spidey hole a lot better. Either way it looks great and works. Iím gonna have to work on my spidey flick though! The jade G-10 handles are semi translucent and allow you to see the nested skeletonized steel liners. The steel liner should make this a strong and robust knife. The handle is ergonomically contured and also has a finger choil to grip higher up on the blade. Both the finger choil and portion of the spine have aggressive jimping that almost verges on sharp. The gorgeous black cerakote drop point blade features a full flat saber grind and the pocket clip and hardware are also painted black to match. Iím not sure its cerakote but it looks great. The pocket clip comes out the box in right hand/tip up carry but is fully adjustable for right and left hand use and tip up or tip down carry. A small lanyard hole is also available regardless of how you set up the Shaman for every day carry. Overall, I love the design and overall look of the Spyderco Shaman.

The locking mechanism on the Spyderco Shaman is a high strength compression lock that is actuated on the top of the knife and is part of the steel liner system. The lock also has some blocky details so you can find it without looking but I wouldnít call it jimping. Either way, this lock can boast extra safety benefits as your fingers are not in the knife path when closing. Once the lock is disengaged the blade closes freely and easily. With some practice I could see one handed deployment and closing.

This Spyderco Shaman has performed great, easily accomplishing all the cutting and slicing tasks Iíve thrown at it.

This is the first Spyderco in my collection and Iím happy with the build quality of this knife. The knife centering is spot on and the grinds look great. The G-10 scales are slim but seem strong and the skeletonized steel liners help the knife feel substantial and strong. My only issue is the ďdisclaimerĒ card the knife came with, warning me not to expose the knife to moisture, skin oils and acidic fluids like citrus fruit. So, I live in Bakersfield, CA. It gets hot, real hot, so its gonna get plenty of sweaty skin oil. I love to fish, so its gonna get wet. And I love drinking Mexican beer with lemons and limes, so its definitely gonna get exposed to lots of acidic fluids. Unless I donít use it. I can keep this knife as a show piece only, but for what I paid, do I really want that? I enjoy carrying my knifes and using them whenever the need arises. Iím known to my family and friends as the guy who always has a knife on them and thatís a point of pride to me. So, Iím gonna stay true to me and use this knife as I would any other knife in my collection. Iíll try to keep it clean and oiled up and we will see if any corrosion arises.

Which brings us to value. All in with tax, I spent around $240 bucks on this Spyderco Shaman. Thank God for layaway! I know the price will be a deal breaker to many. It took me 4 months to pay off this layaway so I feel your pain. I can hear your wallets crying already and I donít blame them. So, is it worth the money and time I spent on it? I can only speak for myself but I think I got my monies worth. The CPM M4 steel was a long time goal of mine to add to the collection and Spyderco did it right on this blade. I love the look and versatility of a drop point and Spydercos design just bangs it out of the park. Simple yet sophisticated and extremely useful. The jade G-10 is flat out cool and premium touch and as always, Iím a sucker for the black cerakote finish. Not to mention the exclusivity of this limited edition, elite version of the Shaman. They could have packaged it in a nicer box but I really love the included letter detailing the exclusiveness and special features of this knife.

My only worry is the upkeep required with the steel. Nobody wants to spends so much on a knife and have to choose whether to not use it or risk corrosion. So, if you only had so much to spend on a primary blade I would probably look for other, more affordable options. Unless, that is, you are a well off collector or really good at knife maintenance. Either way, the question is moot as this limited edition, elite version of the Shaman sold out in record time and is currently unavailable at BladeHQ.

So, to sum things up I think Spyderco did a fantastic job on this elite BladeHQ Limited Edition Shaman. In my opinion the design is classic and well done. The CPM M4 super steel gives me shivers and itís sharp AF! The overall build quality feels great and I really feel like I got more than my money's worth due to its exclusivity. Itís an expensive knife but if you are a hard core collector, or Spyderco fan you would be more than happy to own this knife!

Pros:

The Blade shape and performance is awesome. The Lock-up is great as well. Plus coated M4 is very nice.

Cons:

Action is tight out of box and is a bit heavy. Nipple in front of blade is somewhat of a odd design.

Overall: Great Blade, would recommend.

Excellent fit and finish, great ergonomics

I purchased the exclusive version because I'm a huge fan of M4 steel. I was absolutely impressed with the smooth G10 handles and the feel of the knife. I really couldn't be happier...unless it were a little less expensive. The price point was a touch high at about $200+

Iíve been a knife guy for a while, but this is the first review (and by the looks of it may be the last!) I have ever written. This knife is just amazing. I usually carry a different blade, either fix or foldable, every week, but I am sticking with this one for a while. Its as atrong as I need it to be when I am ďbeing seriousĒ, comfortable to carry as an EDC, and a great slicer. The M4 its just the best, no steel in my opinion can compete; huuuge advantage over S30V , and the black blade its beautiful (havenít decided if I am dying the scales, but this are great in the mean time). This is in my opinion the best Shaman to date, I am just grateful I got to buy one. If you get a change to get it, do not doubt it!!!

Handle this knife and you can tell It was made to work. I didnít particularly care for the look of the knife with the natural scales until I saw it in person. Wow, itís stunning!
I only gave it four stars because the compression lock does not release anywhere nearly as smoothly as my PM 3.

I entered the charity raffle to win this knife but ordered one just in case I wasn't lucky to win it (which I didn't). I EDC a Spyderco para 3 but as a firefighter/paramedic I needed a larger knife that I could operate wearing my bulky firefighters gloves and the Shaman fit the bill perfectly. The carbon steel blade will require a lot of TLC given the environment I work in, however, I enjoy maintaining my equipment. I love the natural G-10 scales on this version of the Shaman. I've gotten a lot of positive feedback at the firehouse.

If you have the Shaman in S30V, You've probably been waiting for the M4 version for a while too.

Great knife that fills out the hand (I have Small to Medium hands), Comfortable in all grips, regular, reversed for self defense, and even the pinch grip, Stout for appropriate heavy use with a phenomenal M4 DLC coated blade. Holds an edge for quite awhile depending on use and what you're cutting. Sharpening can be a pain unless you have some DMT stones :)

If you've never had an M4 blade before, Oil the non-coated parts quite frequently and clean of other oils/fluids. It WILL rust if you don't put in the time to care for it.

Semper Fi!

I had been considering the Shaman for some time when this one become available. I was initially unsure of the black blade natural G10. When I received it, I was pleased with the look. The black hardware, backspace and blade with the greenish G10 go great together. As for the funtion, the action is great. The blade opens effortlessly and can even operate as a front flipper. The compression lock is quite stiff but will hopefully loosen up a bit with use. The knife is built like a tank and obviously designed for hard use. Not a lightweight but carries well in the pocket. Gimping is aggressive offering a very secure grip. Ergonomics are very good. There is a bit of thumb bump while operating the compression lock from the blade choil area. But not a big deal for me. All in all, very pleased with this purchase.
I finally get it!

Color of handle scales not as vivid as expected. A little drab. The action is stiffer than my PM 2. It may loosen in time. I lubricated and loosened the pivot screw but not much better yet. The blade is very sharp! Looking forward to using the M4.

I wear 2xl gloves for most brands. The Shaman is the perfect size for my hands, blade is much stouter at the tip than my PM2. This is an excellent hard use knife, came very sharp (cut me twice), and has remained so. I have only good things to say about M4. For its size, the knife is quite thin, and carries well in the pocket, but high and not very discreet. I am probably going to upgrade the pocket clip, I am just not a big fan of it, I feel it more than I should when handling the knife. Spyderco should really up their game and produce a true deep carry clip which is a bit more ergonomic. I would definitely buy this knife again. 4 stars is because of clip, rest of knife gets 5.
Excellent example of a EDC, can handle just about anything

I was waiting for the Rex 45 version to come out when I saw this. Like that the M4 blade has DLC to help with corrosion resistance. Like the contouring on the handles and the fact I can dye them later if I want. I donít think Iíd be happy with the burnt orange of the Rex 45. Blade was ground well and sharp. Perfect centering. The reason for four stars is that I compared this to my PM2. The PM 2 (LH w/S30V) is much smoother to open and close. Hopefully this knife will end up the same in that department as the PM2 over time and earn a ď5Ē.
Beautiful hard use knife!

Now I like a bit of a larger knife so this fits the bill for me. My first Shaman also. Super sharp, just almost centered,
flawless action and if you like the natural scales... gorgeous! Now I'm not a super fan of the DLC blades for usage but it does look great in this combination. The knife feels absolutely wonderful in the hand. Super solid and powerful. Other than the pocket clip this thing is almost perfect and I love that Blade HQ gave more people a chance for this beauty by ordering more pieces from Spyderco. It doesn't have to be a feeding frenzy for such an item. If you look around now so many companies are now using this marketing tactic.... and we are at fault for it.
I'm in love.......

The Shaman is the best Spyderco I own. After a lot of hype I bought one and wasnít disappointed. My only complaint is that I cut myself within 3 minutes of opening it due to its razor sharp blade
nice knife

This is the most I've spent on a knife before and was kind of reluctant to pull the trigger but I knew it was a exclusive .I am happy I did now .Spyderco has it dialed in.I will take it to task soon but want to keep it new looking.
Maybe the best version of the Shaman

The natural G10 scales have just enough grip to make this knife very usable, the M4 blade arrived extremely sharp, and the action is smooth.

Shipping from BHQ was fast as usual.

I donít see what all the hype is about this knife. Itís big, itís bulky and itís overpriced. Not a good value at all in my opinion.
A little disappointed

Color of handle scales not as vivid as expected. A little drab. The action is stiffer than my PM 2. It may loosen in time. I lubricated and loosened the pivot screw but not much better yet. The blade is very sharp! Looking forward to using the M4.

Another great DLC coated blade from Spyderco. Really love the contrast between the jade g10 scales and the matte black M4 blade! Already taken it through numerous boxes and it's still shaving sharp. This is a great offering from the BladeHQ squad and the Spyderco Golden factory!
This is special

I have a lot of Shamans. It's a great heavy duty knife with nice ergos. DLC on the M4 makes sense to help prevent corrosion and M4 steel is a beast. Well done here.

Easy one handed open and close, with amazingly smooth operation. Great ergonomics make the slightly larger Blade functional for most anything. Easily the Favorite EDC in my collection.

Normally not a fan of DLC but on CPM-M4 Steel it makes sense. Also Spyderco does DLC right and love the natural G10 offering from BHQ. Love to see BHQ use other steel like CruWear for the exclusives.
I like big EDC

This knife is very ergonomic as well as good looking. The M4 steel is extremely sharp and it really holds an edge. Nice to have a DLC coated blade as I live in a humid climate. Definitely a tough use knife!

Wow, such a great version of this knife. Love the way it looks and feels, and with an M4 blade.......you know it's a beast. This is great for hard use, or as a collector's piece.....I actually bought 2, one for the vault and one for the pocket! Truly happy with this purchase, Great knife!!! Thank you Blade HQ!!!
