Description

Description

The folks at Flytanium have a passion for customizing fine cutlery. Enter the Paramilitary 2 from Spyderco. It's a favorite folder for many of us, and an ideal candidate for precision machined brass scales.

This Spyderco Paramilitary 2 knife has been outfitted with tumbled brass scales from Flytanium. The scales, like the original G-10, have been milled to accommodate the nested liners and are drilled for right handed, tip up carry. As you'd expect, the brass adds a fair amount of weight, giving the Paramilitary 2 a little extra heft in hand. This model has a satin finished S30V steel blade. Scales are milled in China to high tolerances for exceptional fit and finish.

So, a couple of things to know about this knife:
There is pretty significant lock stick (hoping that breaks in with time). That's a spyderco issue.
The scales are more polished than the photo shows. I was hoping for a slightly textured stone wash kinda feel (like the display photo).
More importantly, at certain angles you can see fine machine marks that the stone wash didn't get rid of. I sent Flytanium an email with pictures and explained these two concerns and they were very receptive. They said that the display photo probably has a patina developed after being handled for a while and that those light machine lines are visible on all of their scales (For the record, they're not obvious lines. I wish I could attach a photo). They suggested stone washing it more myself if I wanted to change the look (in a helpful tone, not just telling me to do it myself if I don't like it) and also offered to work with BHQ to ensure that I get a full refund if that's what I want.
In the end, they're not so bad that I want a refund. I'll see how it breaks in and wash it myself if it bugs me later. Food for thought though.
All that being said, the scales and liners fit well together. The added weight makes the knife look and feel, for lack of a better word, special. And, they included the original G-10 scales in the box so you could switch to high speed- low drag mode if you choose to (that was an unexpected bonus). It looks classy as heck!
