Best Pro-Tech Knives
Pro-Tech is known for making some of the best automatic knives on the market. Their commitment to excellence has helped them turn out incredible products for the last 20 years. From snappy everyday carry knives to beefy tactical folders, Pro-Tech knives have been a top choice for law enforcement and military personnel.
That’s what makes writing this article so difficult; they’re all just so darn good! I’ve never held one that I wouldn’t be excited to carry long-term. They’re also made by real salt-of-the-earth folks right here in the USA, and have great materials and build quality to boot. Picking a list of "the best Pro-Tech Knives" is like picking a list of my favorite children—all of them would make the list.
In this article, I take a stab at the 10 best Pro-Tech knives. Let’s get started.
10 Best Pro-Tech Knives

1. Pro-Tech Malibu

Before the Malibu, Pro-Tech was best known for their autos. But not only did they prove that they can make a dang good manual, but they single-handedly created the button lock manual craze that has gripped the knife community for years now.
My favorite feature of the Malibu is its handle. Its taper toward the pommel, coupled with its subtle contouring around the fingers, makes it an absolute joy to hold. You can’t go wrong with the Malibu, it’s a great knife!
2. Pro-Tech Godfather

Italian stilettos are cool, but in the modern knife world, they are frankly dated. But as a life-long lover of automatic knives, Dave Wattenberg made the Godfather to bring the iconic stiletto into the 21st century. Its design reads old-school gangster, but its materials and mechanism are distinctly high-speed-low-drag modern operator. It’s especially good at piercing, as its blade comes to a needle-like point and its handle contours form a sort of guard.
3. Pro-Tech Godson

If you love the Godfather, but want something a bit more EDC-friendly, then the Godson is the move. Clearly a lot of people think like you, because the Godson is the Pro-Tech knife with the most variations in handle color, inlays, blade finishes, edge types, etc. Whether you want to go with a modern tactical feel or a vintage mob-boss vibe, you can do it with a Godson!

Bryan L. says…
"They are right when they say that Pro-Tech has certain snap. This thing is mean. The quality is amazing. The blade comes razor sharp out of the box, and holds an edge. I love the aluminum smooth handle. Very slick. I consider this my gentleman’s EDC."
4. Pro-Tech Oligarch

The Oligarch was released in 2024, and it’s made some waves. First of all, this knife is a collaboration with Russian custom knifemaker Dmitry Sinkevich. He is known for his ability to make distinctive and functional designs, but this is among his first forays into automatics. The Oligarch’s design is great for everyday carry, and with the Pro-Tech automatic action, it’s also a formidable tactical knife. If I were a bodyguard, detective, or some other armed professional in a suit, I’d pick the Oligarch in a heartbeat!
5. Pro-Tech Mordax

As you might have noticed with some of the other knives on this list, Pro-Tech loves to collaborate with cool knifemakers. Ferrum Forge Knife Works joined the force to make the Mordax, and knife lovers can’t get enough of it. It uses the same button lock mechanism found on the Malibu, so you know it’s smooth and fidgety. In addition, we have a forward finger choil, something you don’t see too often on knives of this size. That allows you more control of the edge when doing precise cuts. Of all the Pro-Tech knives, the Mordax has one of the most versatile designs. You can’t go wrong with it!
6. Pro-Tech TR-3

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if I could only pick one knife for the rest of my life, there’s a good chance it would be the Pro-Tech TR-3. Its design is just so good for so many things! It’s name tells you what it was intened for, Tactical Response. TR-3’s have found their way into the pockets of soldiers, police officers, and tactical professionals for over 25 years now. But it’s also a favorite of hunters, campers, and everyday folks!
By the way, there’s a manual version coming out in 2024 with the same button lock as the Malibu and Mordax, and I am HYPED.
7. Pro-Tech Runt 5

The Runt was Pro-Tech’s first ever knife. Pro-Tech has been headquartered in California since the beginning, and the Runt was made to comply with California automatic knife laws. That means its blade is less than two inches long, but Pro-Tech designed this one to be usable in an adult’s hand. The Runt has taken a few forms over the years, but the current model, the Runt 5, is the best. My favorite part of the Runt 5 is the nice knurling texture on the spine where your thumb rests. It’s a really nice touch!
8. Pro-Tech Rockeye

Les George is one of the knife communities favorite designers. He was a marine who also has a gift for knifemaking, and his designs are some of the best tactical knives in existence. The Rockeye is no exception! It’s got a big handle that accommodates either a forward or reverse grip in even the largest of gloved hands. But it’s not just a fighting knife, its drop point blade is perfect for slicing food and carving around camp. It’s a great design, and worthy knife for any pocket.
9. Pro-Tech SBR

In the last section we talked about how good Les George is at making tactical knives, but his EDC game is really good too. The SBR, or Short-Bladed Rockeye, bears much of the same design as the Rockeye, but it’s the perfect size for everyday cutting jobs. This stout automatic folding knife is built to take a beating and keep on going.
It knife features a beautifully designed drop point blade with thumb jimping on the spine. A large finger choil and textured aluminum handle provide ample grip and control while using the knife. Finally, the SBR has an incredible automatic action that gives a satisfying "thwack" when deployed. This knife is bound to impress even the pickiest knife nut.

Darren H. says…
"Perfect size for EDC. I really like this knife. Great size to carry everyday or when you want something a little smaller. Pro-Tech hit this one out of the park."
10. Pro-Tech Strider

Mick Strider’s SnG design is immediately recognizable by its handle. It flares out gradually towards the pommel, giving the pinky and ring fingers more to hold on to and angling the tip of the knife forward. This knife has ben a favorite in tactical spheres for decades, so the Pro-Tech SnG Auto was a foregone conclusion. Pro-Tech does a really good job of taking iconic tactical knife designs and turning them into world-class automatics all while maintaining the feel and function of the source material.
Why Buy a Pro-Tech?
If you buy a Pro-Tech, you’re guaranteed a great knife. Their rigorous quality control, optimized design, and attention to detail have made them a favorite of the knife industry. I once did an interview with Pro-Tech’s founder, Dave Wattenberg. In it, I asked him what the secret to selling knives is, and his answer was so gangster:
"I’ve always had a harder time making knives then selling them."
From where I sit in the knife industry, I can tell you that the vast majority of knifemakers have the opposite problem. But Pro-Tech invests the time and effort into the technology, relationships, and R&D to make a product so good it sells itself!
If you have the opportunity to handle or use a Pro-Tech knife, make the most of it. They are absolutely amazing.
