The 8551BK Benchmade Mediator holds true to its namesake, mediating simple and lightweight, and durability and strength. The Mediator is slim and light, but still rock solid in construction, employing some of the world's finest knife materials; the handle has G-10 handle scales with a milled chevron pattern and the blade is Cerakote coated CPM-S90V, offering top of the line edge retention. A safety lock on the handle prevents unintentional blade collapse and deployment. The piece is finished with a reversible tip-up, deep carry pocket clip and a lanyard hole. Sometimes its the little things that make the biggest splash.
This knife checks all the boxes. S90V steel, light weight, great blade profile and really snappy auto action. I've been carrying this knife now for several months and it has proven to be a great EDC. The one hand deployment and great blade has made all of my friends want one.
One of my top 10 Price is not too high S90v steel can't be beat (unless it's m90v) opens a bit hard ( button hard to depress) but it DOES NOT take 2 hands to push the button. Scary sharp and nice weight and feel for these large hands. Thanks Blade HQ!
I've carried the Mediator almost every day for three weeks. It carries very well in jeans, tactical pants, and slacks. The pocket clip works good once it's broken in. Deployment is snappy, and lockup is perfect. No blade play or lock slop. The handle feels great and is fairly grippy. I've not put it to hard use yet, but there are no hot spots that I've noticed. The S90V blade steel is excellent and surprisingly easy to get scary sharp with a Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker. The blade shape is sturdy with a strong tip. It cuts cardboard with ease and glides through envelopes. It's not the best at slicing, but it's definitely adequate. I stabbed and sliced through some cloth almost too easily. I'd call this a light tactical knife, but I think it works well as a medium-hard use EDC. Lastly, the Mediator is just a beautiful knife and fun to deploy. I'm a fan.
Ive never really been drawn to anything in the black class but this knife does a great job of bridging the gap between edc and tactical folder. Feels great in the hand and is super snappy. Don't hesitate to pull the rigger on this one!
This thing is amazing right out of the box. It’s super super sharp, I cut so many things with such ease and the action is so smooth. Everything is just amazing with it. If you’re going to get a knife to have all day every day this is the one to get. It’s light and strong. The pocket clip works perfect to help you hold the knife while hitting the fire button. It make it secure in your hand and you won’t have to worry about dropping it with that clip. So amazing. Just pull the trigger and buy it
I Purchased this mediator in 2020 and have had it for a little over a year. this to me is hands down the best everyday carry ever. I'm a veteran of 10 years and a firefighter and have only sent this knife in one time to be sharpened by Benchmade. This thing holds its sharpness and is extremely durable. This knife has been through 12 structure fires in my pocket in my bunker gear on top of dropping it a million times. i put my knives through the ringer and this one is still as good as it was on day one! Highly recommend this knife to anyone on the fence.
I saw this when it appeared in Benchmade's "coming this year" catalog and knew of the entire catalog I needed it. Did not disappoint. Normally I but here but while in Gulf Shores found a knife store nearly by and the salesman was not knowledgeable about knives and clearly was on commission. To make the sale he kept throwing out discount prices and bundle deals that just didn't add up to him. I scored the Mediator for about 40% off the best online price and randomly I got the last 1st production run knife they had remaining out of about 10 mediators in stock. score! It is an automatic that I think closely resembles the #1 bugout. it had more weight which I prefer. it is impossible not to be proud of this knife so
I own a CLA-10 auto (which I admit is nearly the same knife). As life works.. I had lost it for quite some time and it was sold out.. so I finally ordered a Mediator. I of course, found the CLA-10 after having had the mediator for only a few days (and thrown out all the packaging haha). The Mediator is just too small? in my hand.. it feels like i'm going to drop it when I open it. I can't return it (due to having tossed the box) so I guess i'll try to sell it 2nd hand. Beautiful knife, just prefer my CLA-10 for my hand.
I got this from another seller last month-got tired of waiting for bladehq to get it,(although they're my favorite seller.Everything id spot on with mine,it's a numbered first production.I like it,and it definitly gets carried on a regular basis-came very sharp, and rips through cardboard as good as anything I've got,(which suprised me).I'd buy it again Update-benchmade just came out with a 940 auto, imo, the mediator is supior for several reasons-one,s90v instead of 30v,that's a big step up,and two,the g10 on the mediator looks better and feels better then the aluminium handle on the 940.However,I would buy a 943 in the auto configuration
Been using benchmade knives for working on the farm. Really like this one. Don’t want to even get it dirty, but will tell you that I was just tapping on bales of hay and never had a knife cut by one tap. Awesome
Just received this Knife,I have plenty of Benchmade with same Finish this one within one week of light use ,cutting Foam board the front part of edge about 1 inch completely flaked off,
The style and blade are great but the fit and finish of this knife are left to be desired. After about 2 months of use the screw that holds the blade stop became stripped and fell out, I assume from the impact from the knife hitting it repeatedly and now the stop is loose. The button also sticks and won't come loose until you oil it and hit the side of the scale to knock it loose (this continues to be an issue). I would stick to the bugout.
I've purchased 12 Benchmade knives over the past 15 years. Every one performed perfectly right out of the box. Except this Mediator. It's a beautiful EDC. The blade style is perfect, the blade material is perfect, the ergonomics are perfect. I really looked forward to seeing it in real life. But after receiving it I was truly disappointed in the knife and also Benchmade. Why? Because I would never have believed that Benchmade would ever have let this knife out the door without any quality control checks. This Mediator is Impossible to open without using both hands to position the knife so as to be able to apply heavy pressure on the blade release button. This knife is quite obviously defective, It's going back. No one should pay $250 for a "pocket knife" that doesn't work perfectly out of the box. Until Benchmade gets their act together on automatic knives, steer clear off them. Their Axis Lock knives are perfect. Hope this helps.
