Boker Plus Kissaki
The Boker Plus Kissaki, designed by Thomas Krug of M.B.F., is a compact fixed blade that blends modern practicality with the timeless spirit of Japanese bladecraft. Drawing clear inspiration from classical samurai weaponry, the knife carries design cues rooted in traditional Japanese aesthetics while remaining purpose-built for everyday carry. The name “Kissaki” refers to the tip section of a sword blade—historically defined by its geometry and craftsmanship. On this knife, the Chu-Kissaki profile (literally “medium kissaki”) creates a pronounced, reinforced point that excels at precise, controlled cutting tasks while maintaining strength and durability. The blade itself is crafted from corrosion-resistant 440C stainless steel, offering dependable edge retention and toughness suited to daily use.
Complementing the blade is a handle design deeply influenced by traditional sword construction. Beneath the wrap sits an imitation ray skin (samegawa) texture, a nod to the natural ray skin used on Japanese sword handles to enhance grip. Over this lies a muted wine-red cord wrapped in the classic Hineri-Maki cross pattern—the traditional alternating wrap style seen on many katana. In this method, the cord twists slightly between each crossing, producing the distinctive diamond-shaped openings while locking the wrap tightly into place. The result is both visually striking and highly functional, creating a textured, tactile surface that enhances grip security even in demanding conditions.
Despite its compact footprint, the Kissaki offers a generously sized handle that promotes excellent control and stability. The longer grip allows the user to maintain confident handling during detailed work, while the Chu-Kissaki tip provides accuracy for fine cuts, piercing tasks, and controlled slicing. Together, these elements create a balanced tool that feels precise in hand without sacrificing durability.
