Upon receiving the razor, I inspected the edge and found there was a nick in the blade near the heel. I stropped it thoroughly and immediately did an initial shave and was really disappointed in the overall sharpness of the blade. It was getting hung up on my whiskers and not getting close enough until I did many passes over the same area. I shaved all with the grain, then lathered up again and went against the grain and the razor still wasn't getting close even with multiple passes in the same area. This will definitely have to be more thoroughly sharpened with compound before it will be ready to shave. The overall quality of the razor is good, but unless you are comfortable with sharpening (not just stropping) a straight razor, steer clear of this one. I currently use a cheap DOVO shavette with Gillette disposable blades and I am able to shave much closer with fewer passes and less irritation than with this Boker razor.
