Description

This Mastodon has a black twill carbon fiber overlay on a G-10 handle.

The CIVIVI Mastodon are burly folders modeled after classic meat cleavers, including the characteristic round hole near the tip. On the old school cleavers, that hole was there so you could hang the knife up, but you won't have to with the Mastodon thanks to the deep carry pocket clip. The handle has a neutral shape that fits a variety of grips. Carry a real statement of a knife with the Mastdon.

Features:
  • Stout cleaver style blade makes a statement.
  • Reliable flipper action tuned to perfection.
  • Reversible deep-carry pocket clip.

This knife is described by BladeHQ as a Damasteel blade, but it is most definately not Damasteel, and appears to be a 9cr based "chinese damascus". Still a quality steel, especially at it's price point. It looks great and is a true layered damascus as you can tell by the layers near the choil.

This is a big chunky boy. The CF scales feel great in hand, if a little smooth. I've seen other places describe the scales as G-10 with a CF layer, but I think this is mistaken as the CF is apparent on the inside of the scales too. I think the G-10 is in reference to the backspacer.

The action is good, runs on bronze washers. It's not fully drop-shut but will drop easily enough with a little wrist flick. Detent is a hair on the soft side for a heavy blade, but it snaps out consistently.

I think BladeHQ has mis-priced this item, given the prices that other sites run and the price on the mini-version, both of which are significantly higher than $57. If you want to try a cleaver, or add a damascus/CF knife to your collection, it's going to be hard to beat this price on a new knife.

I have never really been one for Damascus (or damasteel) knives, but golly this thing is pretty. And massive! I really had no idea how big it was until i opened it and man its a big knife. The fit and finish is nice, the liner lock does feel a little thin, but it work fine. I saw that it was on sale for less than $60, when on other sites is was around $90-$100, so I figured it would be a neat knife. I'm still trying to figure out what the Mini is significantly more expensive. haven't yet put it through its paces but looking forward to carrying it.
