The Spetsnaz® Trench Shovel Shovel from Cold Steel is modeled after the original Special Forces Shovel. This tactical shovel features a black-coated medium grade carbon steel head and socket that has been heat treated for maximum strength. The edges come sharpened to an utility/ax edge that can be easily improved to razor sharpness. Hardwood handle. This shovel is designed to be used in any tactical situation.
I bought a Cold Steel shovel in what is now the smaller size in the early 90s. I have used it from that time to now for everything you can imagine, only changed the handle once, and it's still going strong. The Spetsnaz is built much the same way. It trades off a bit of the portability and maneuverability of the smaller shovel for greater efficiency in a bigger head and longer haft. The edges are sharper than I would have expected, but I just used it in a confined area with a bunch of roots and it made the job much easier. The longer handle makes using the foot ramps much more practical, and it's easy to get into a rhythm that moves the dirt fast. My one complaint is that the screw heads are sharp and stick out. The holes in the socket are chamfered to sink the screw heads, but they weren't shot in straight. I can fix it, but it's annoying that someone didn't take 10 extra seconds to do it right the first time. It's still a great shovel for when you can't fit a full size in the area. I am happy with it and have no regrets.
