This Covert Auto model has a stonewash finished CPM-S30V stainless steel blade with a plain edge and a Tactical Gray aluminum handle.
The Gerber Covert Auto is an evolution of the Applegate-Fairbairn folder with the addition of fast automatic action at the press of a button. It has an over-sized release button for easy deployment even with gloves. A front mounted safety engages in both the open and closed positions for secure carry and use. The Covert features aluminum scales with grip enhancing grooves and stainless liners to assure the rigidity of the handle. Its removable deep carry clip allows convenient and discreet carry. Comfortable, practical, and reasonably priced, the Covert makes an excellent tactical knife choice.
S30v blade snaps open kicks like a mule razor sharp out of the box and love the mat I got with it
Very nice automatic knife! Of course, Gerber is known for their quality, and this is def up to their standards. Lock works nicely, release is clean & quick, blade snaps out smartly, but doesnt tear knife from your grip. The pocket clip is a big help for holding on with big hands while opening. Price was another factor, just over a C-note.
Awesome knife! light weight, good steel, good handle material, Deep pocket carry clip. only down side is the tip down (cant be tip up) and the lanyard hole is basically pointless. Lastly, if your going to buy this knife you HAVE to sharpen it yourself because out of box the blade is not able to cut paper or shave hair. Don't use a belt sharpening system though as I tried that and ruined the tip. Customer service was shady. I sent them my knife and a month later they said they never got it. I complained until they sent me a new one. Oddly enough they knew exactly what knife to send without me telling them. weird because they only way they could've known that was if they got my old knife with the paper I filled out because I never gave them the info of my address or knife over the phone!! so watch out and save your tracking numbers when dealing with customer service!!
This is a great, solid knife. Easy to use, dependable and it feels great in your hands. However, I just wish there was a way to convert it to a Tip-Up Carry by reversing the clip. No idea why Gerber hasn't developed a reversible clip. I had hoped after closer (hands-on) inspection, that I might be able to fashion my own clip that allows for a Tip-Up Carry. However if so, it's going to take some work out in the machine shop to do so.
The blade and the handle of this blade are good: blade comes sharp and is made of a good steel, the handle is comfortable even if some of the jimping is a bit sharp. But there are a lot of problems in the rest of the knife. The knife I got had blade play out of the box, and the small cutout on the blade where the lock engages does not inspire any confidence that the lockup will stay solid. The action of the blade is reliable, but the blade opens pretty slowly compared to other autos or even assisted knives. My biggest complaint is the pocket clip, which was loose out of the box, and the way that detail was overlooked just gives me a bad feeling about the quality of the knife. The price of this knife implies a level of quality that the knife just does not live up to, which is sad because all the problems could have been solved with a bit more attention to detail on Gerber's part.
At this price point, I was expecting more. On a positive note, the s30v and aluminum scales are nice, but I’ve never spent $140 on a knife that was dull out of the box. Cheap pocket clip. Blade not centered at all. Pretty sure the blade is actually crooked or bent. ****update**** 5/30/18 Sent knife back manufacturer, Received new knife back from gerber, their warranty was very quick. Increase review to 3 stars for a good warranty.
This knife has a lot going for it. The design is elegant, the steel is great, it's made here in the US of A, and the opening is definitely handy. However, there are a few major misses I feel keep the knife from being a five star product, at least for me. First of all, the blade is sluggish in deployment. This is more of a QC complaint than anything, because I know these have a range of speeds and some are snappy, I just didn't end up with one of those. This is minor though; the blade hasn't ever failed to lock up or anything, it's just no Protech Godfather (but then it doesn't cost like one either). The next issue is also one of personal preference, but it is important for many people nonetheless. That being the clip...It's a nice clip fundamentally, being very deep carry and having flush screws, but it's tip down only, which I'm not a huge fan of. I knew this going in and decided I could live with it, but it would have been nice to see a reversible clip. Finally, the most important issue with this knife, the edge. When I got mine it wouldn't even cut copy paper, which is fairly easy. Turns out the entire edge was just a burr so it was basically folded over and completely dull. Once sharpened, though, the blade holds a nice edge.
This knife is well made-combat capability is unquestionable-blade design superb together with overall construction excellent-safety control included.Topping it off w/"Made In USA." My observations of operation:this knife is unlike other autos some from different countries. The opening is slow compared to many others of similar design such as the "Russian Mikov." So Far So Good; however-faultless deployment. I have yet to find a knife that is 5 stars in my book. 2 criticisms of the knife- "opening" which fires slower than many others and the safety which is basically useless! This knife cannot be carried safely because the safety switch has practically no tension whatsoever! This is one of the main faults of the gerber autos! I hope they improve this in the future.
