I'm a big fisherman so I need a bait knife and this works well. It's easy to sharpen yet it can hold an edge. the aluminum scales are nice because all the little scratches gives the knife some patina.
Cool, but useless for most applications

This is a really cool knife, but is not practical for most applications. A nightmare to open boxes with. Great for taking out on picnics and cutting Cheese or Sausage though! Don't get me wrong, it does look really cool and will get heads turning when you bring out this guy, but as an EDC I'd have to say no.

You get what you pay for as far as it being alittle stiff opening at first and some blade play when closed. Once opened it feels rock solid.

Gerber Flatiron, I must admit, I had no small expectations for the Flatiron, making it into the "Best Folding Knives" in the "Best Knives" section on BHQ. When I first opened it up I was immediately impressed by how solid the Flatiron felt in hand. Under closer inspection, the blade certainly looks intimidating and has a stonewash finish that is tough to scratch. The knife is ergonomic and feels good in the hand. The action is fairly smooth, with a secure lockup. Closing the Flatiron is a little tough but can be managed with one hand. For the cons, the blade is far from razor-sharp like most people first assume and I guess I am just a little "cleavered out". The Flatiron is just chunky and feels as such in your pocket. It has a real stinker of a pocket clip and with the slick aluminum scale, could really benefit from some gimping. I actually got my hands on the Tan G-10 Flatiron version, and to my dismay, I could neither open nor close the knife with one hand. The knife was a terrible stiff mess. So it is difficult to segregate the knives from each other. Still, after all that, the Flatiron is one of my favorite Gerber knives. It is tough, soundly build, and looks impressive. 76/100

Solid design and feel with great lock up. Comfortable to hold and use for a variety of tasks. I really like the wider stubby pocket clip because it's easier to access the knife when you need it, unlike a deep carry knife. And I can only assume that the reviewers who are saying it is impossible to open one handed have small and weak hands because I've had no problem opening it with my meat hook.

Just bought one a few days ago for work will see how it goes. This knife is designed really strange.One- handed opening is impossible and the blade sticks out way too far when the knife is closed.. the belt clip is way too stubby. Gerber may have a miss on this one

I have worked with knives my entire life as a navy boswainmate and bosun in the us merchant marine. I have used many folders from gerber, this one is the worst. The egde cracked off after slicing an onion. I recived this knife in a battlbox. This one i believe is dangerous to use. I encourage any one who has this folder to return it to gerber for something else. Doug andrews ret. Bosn us merchant marine.

I love this knife! I've been carrying this knife everyday for over 6 months! It's great for any task you can throw at it! It was very stiff at the beginning but it finally loosened up. I would love to see a premium steel version with a flipper!

I got one of these in a Battlbox a couple months ago. It's a little hefty. The detent makes it hard to open with a thumb. It's easier to pinch the blade between your thumb and middle finger to disengage the detent and then fling it open. The steel is sub par in my opinion but it's fun to have a cleaver to play with. Fit and finish needs some work but at least it locks up nice.

Knife came very stiff.... Not sure if it was bc it was over tightened or a wonky washer or what but I took it a part, lightly cleaned, sanded and oiled it and put it back together. It made a world of difference.... I keep it my camping pack for food prep. Sturdy blade but it will need maintenance for sure....

There are things I love about this knife and things that drive me nuts.

First the good. Itís a very aesthetically pleasing design. The hollow grind is really nice with the chunky spine. I donít mind the cheaper steel on a $30 knife, letís me practice my sharpening skills more. The black wash finish is really pretty.

Now the not so good. While the cutout is visually appealing it is darn near impossible to open with one hand. I almost always open it with two. You can get it started and then give it a little flick of the wrist and it will snap open, but the frame lock is so tight that it becomes painful to push it to release and close. Speaking of tight this is without a doubt the tightest pocket clip Iíve ever had on a knife. Itís almost impossible to get it clipped into your pocket with one hand.

That said itís pretty and gets a lot of looks and comments when you pull it out but it needs a lot of refinement. Iím saving up for a Spyderco Roc

Some nice design touches and a strong figure with great ergonomics to boot. Good design done well. Blade steel could be a bit better but the price reflects that so I canít rag on it for that to much. Just a consideration for the future. I have taken mine hiking and camping and itís great for food prep and feather sticking.

All I wanted out of this knife was to have a cleaver style knife that opens, locks, and closes. This knife barely does two of those.

The action is gritty and stiff (which was expected) but once the knife is open there is large amounts of blade play. The lockbar is so stiff it is a pain to close, somehow Gerber managed to make a knife that is both stiff and loose at the same time. Even after tightening the screws and adding a little lube it still is to date the worst knife I have owned.
Cool design but needs work.

I really like the design of this knife but thatís where my liking stops. Hard to open one handed, lock is hard to operate, and had to bend the clip out some to get it to clip on the pocket. I would gladly pay more money for better fit and finish. Maybe a flipper and better bearing option? Again, cool design just needs some work.

Was very hesitant because Iíve never had a Gerber that worked well. I am a sucker for cleavers and decided for the price it was worth the risk. Turned out to be well worth it. For the price it is an awesome knife and the only downfall is like others have said is opening one handed is difficult. I put a zip tie on the hole and itís made one handed opening much easier. If youíre on the fence about this one I say go for it.

This knife is awesome. Feels great in the hand, and comes razor sharp out of the box. I received it and immediately started to use it and put it through its paces. It's a little tough to open one handed, but I'm guessing with time it'll open easier like other Gerber products I own.

I'd like to say, this is definitely the direction I'd like to see Gerber's EDC knives to continue in. Framelock, Overtravel Stop, Awesome fit and finish at a competitive price. Sure, it's not the greatest steel, but man, absolutely a bang for your buck. No blade play, excellent lock up, awesome feel. I'd like to see the opening hole be either widened, or have a flipper option, because the hole is a bit tricky to learn, and like to rough up the thumb pads. Put it this way: if this was US made, with S30V and had a semi-improved opener, I'd easily pay $150. Awesome design, super comfortable. Reminds me of an Impaler with the cleaver/wharncliff blade. Just badassary. 4 stars all day.
