Description

Description

Straight from Blade Show 2015 the Kizer Splinter is the latest collaboration knife with TomCat designs. This elegant gentleman's folder features a blue anodized titanium handle with a S35VN steel blade. Ceramic ball bearings allow for super smooth opening with the integrated blade flipper. A titanium frame lock provides a reliable lock up of the blade with minimal blade play. There is a natural stonewash finish on the blade that adds to the sophisticated look of the knife. The handle is equipped with a custom pivot, lanyard hole and a reversible titanium pocket clip. The Kizer Splinter offers the slim profile and durable construction that are essential to a good EDC knife.

There are a couple of shortcomings with this blade, yet there are some things that are beyond expectations. First the good: it is beautiful. Probably the most aesthetic knife I own. It feels great in the hand. The texture of the handle is very nice. The pictures here do not do the handle justice. The colors and patterns are more vibrant than I expected. The speed of the blade opening is enough to put a smile on your face. The downsides to it: the flipper tab needs to be a touch larger, maybe 15% more would improve it. Due to the flipper tab being kind of small, it makes it tricky to open. You really have to push harder than most of my knives. Also, the blade was not as sharp as I would have imagined. Overall, great knife. I would buy it again. The small shortcomings can be handled, just a little sharpening and practice with the flipper. I would give this a 4.5.
Outstanding buy despite a few misses

Too often lately I've ordered knives that I thought I would love, only to have that "meh" feeling when I handled them. (Thank goodness for BHQ's awesome return policy). This knife, though, owned me the moment I took it out of the box.

Someone really needs to tell Kizer that you can't put a $500 handle on a $120 knife. The anodization looks better than in the pictures, and on mine the random variations feature a lot of green and a sort of fractal pattern that really makes the whole thing look mid-tech or even custom. The machining on the handle is smooth but grippy, and in general it kind of epitomizes the "gentleman folder" concept. I would just never expect a knife to appear this refined at this price point.

As other reviewers noted, there is a small hot spot near the top end of the frame lock, but at least for my hand it's not a big deal.

I also agree that the flipper should be a little larger or have jimping (or both). Because the handle is so slim, it's easy to get a little hand pressure on the frame lock and have it cause your finger to slip off of the minimalist flipper. If you are a mall ninja who needs to count on your knife to deploy in a hot second when the zombies attack, this ain't for you. But if you can spare half a second to make sure you're using the right technique, you're good to go. That said, I still plan to file in some jimping on the flipper.

The action itself is spot on, with a decent balance of detent tension and smooth bearings that reminds me of the excellent ZT 0450 (which also won't budge if you have pressure on the lock bar).

The factory edge was grabby but not smooth (i.e., okay for cardboard, but comparatively poorly in paper tests). Being S35VN, it should touch up just fine to a razor edge, but I would have preferred shaving sharpness out of the box.

And speaking of the box... I know packaging shouldn't matter, but this is the nicest I've ever seen, including in $500 knives. Trivial I know, but it adds to the feeling that this knife is something special.

Bottom line: this may be the best knife bargain I've ever found.

I ordered the black/blue just to try it out, was fully to prepared to dislike it enough to send back, if for no other reason than it is Chinese made. After a week now, no way will I send it back. On other forums some disliked it for the smallish flipper. Others found a share edge at top of the frame lock.

The flipper is perfect size. After a few hundred openings / closings I used a tad bit of blue locktite on the hinge screw as it had loosened just a little bit. It is now perfect opening and closing. Hard to believe it is not spring assisted, it is impossible to pressure the flipper too little so it doesn't lock up when opening.

I've found no annoying sharp edges anywhere, the quality of manufacturing has changed my mind on the whole 'made in China' stigma. Fit and finish is superb.

Great knife. I'm carrying it almost a year and I can say that it's an excellent EDC knife. It has an excellent fit and finish. Perfect size for EDC carry for work and other activities. Almost invisible in the pocket. Easy to sharpen due to the straight line cutting edge. Very smooth opening, the bearings are fantastic! Easy to maintain and use.

I will highly recommend this knife if you want your knife to pop from your pocket, especially when you are wearing slim pants.

Decent knife

Fit and finish is excellent. Good looking knife fits well in the hand. My only complaint is that the blade was dull......really dull. I did not expect to have sharpen a brand new knife. Honestly it was the dullest knife I have ever bought.
