The 498 Marine Combat fixed blade knife from Ontario is crafted from 1095 high carbon steel with a non-reflective zinc phosphate black finish. The clip point top edge is sharpened while the tang is stamped U.S. ONTARIO. The Marine Combat knife has a stacked black leather handle with a steel guard and pommel cap. Includes a black leather sheath with belt loop.
This knife is great, I was disappointed when I got it however, because when I opened the box the entire blade was burred. It sharpens up very nicely about half way through sharpening I slipped and had to go get stitches. So besides that it's a wonderful knife!
I am disappointed with this knife. I talked my mom into buying me one when I was about twelve years old at a surplus store in Greenville, SC and I still have that one at the age of forty-two. The knife I just purchased is nowhere near the quality of that older knife. People say that often about most things it seems like but in the case of this knife, it's visibly noticeable from the grainy, burred blade to the, well, completely full, fuller. I don't know if the same blade steels are used in the older production models but the blade in the new knife seems flimsy to me. I have not used the knife but this is my first impression. Even the markings on the ricasso are poorly struck and almost non-existent in some parts of the font. I'm not making the argument that aesthetics supersede functionality but, hopefully, this is just with my knife and not indicative of the quality levels of this model as a whole. Thanks
