SOG is at it again with this new Terminus XR LTE knife!
This model of the Terminus XR LTE is tasteful, nonetheless. The handle is made of carbon fiber, and the latest feature? New, lightweight, carbon fiber liners. The Terminus XR is lighter than ever with these liners and it makes this knife that much better. The graphite gray, coated blade is forged from CPM-S35VN stainless steel in a drop point shape. With matching gray hardware and a pocket clip, the handle flaunts the dark carbon fiber effortlessly.
Features:
This was my most expensive knife purchase, I was very hesitant to spend the money at first. But let me tell you… it’s worth it and I would buy again! The action took about a week to break in, after that it is like butter! It is so smooth and easy to open and close. Has a nice fidget factor too. If you are ok the fence about this knife, just pull the trigger! You won’t regret this one
The weight is fantastic, the blade steel is awesome, the lock up is super tight, the size is great, the deep carry clip is strong, and the look is simple. My only complaint is the roughness of the XR lock. Could be the carbon fiber but it's still there. Little rough but that's my only complaint.
The structural, carbon fiber, scales are the interesting part here. No liners, just CF. If you're into materials for their own sake this is a great addition to the collection. I'd buy it again. With the carbon construction this is super light. The carbon adds a bit of bulk, but I don't notice it in the pocket and I think it helps in the hand. My copy flips cleanly, the blade is centered, the scales are finished well and the lock is a great version of the Axis system. The clip is unobtrusive and works well. It's also very easy to convert to left hand, tip up, carry. Nothing to complain about build-wise. For me, it would be even better without the thumb studs or the coated blade.
For an axis-lock variation flipper design, this is a very well designed knife. I wish I can say the same for the production part of the knife, which was filled with issues on the knife that I purchased. BUT after contacting SOG, they encourage me to send it in for repair, and I have to say they do stand behind their product and make it right. For a company known for it's multi-tools, this is a very solid attempt to come back into the knife world. Few improvements I did to make this knife superb: 1) take it apart and give a good clean, then add few drops of nano oil (issue is they used a very THICK oil which makes the knife very gritty and poor action). 2) remove the unnecessary thumbstud to make the folder more balance when when deploy the knife. 3) I use the magic eraser to polish the coating to make it more smoother so it wont grip everything that you try t slice through. all in all I am very happy with this knife. Bottomline, like any good knife/firearm company, SOG stand behind their product and will fix the issues.
I spent a lot of money on this knife and I really wanted to love it. It looks nice, it cuts well, it fits nicely in my pocket; but try as I may, I can’t get it to open reliably. The problem is the lock does not move smoothly. It feels like it’s made of 1200 grit sandpaper and sounds like it too. The blade swings freely and I tried oiling the lock - it just doesn’t work. My Ultra XR is great and I was expecting something better from the Terminus. I took the knife apart and polished the carbon fiber liners where the lock bar caps rub and it helped slightly. I then bought a cheaper Terminus XR with steel liners and it was much better. The gritty feel comes from the carbon fiber. I can get reliable opening by putting my thumb on the bar cap on the blade side and pulling down slightly while I flip the blade. Not ideal, but it works.
