The Spyderco Sun & Moon Chaparral lockback knife features a smooth, white G-10 handle scale with a red G-10 dot to represent the sun, and a smooth, black G-10 scale with a genuine mother of pearl inlay to represent the moon. It includes a reversible, tip-up wire clip for deep carry.
A Chaparral is a shrub native to the Western United States with the unique ability to perennially survive, revive and regenerate after being destroyed by drought. Its also what Spyderco calls their new and continuing series of gentlemens folders. Mid-sized Chaparral folders will have identical blades and handle profiles but showcase variant handle materials. Handle options will be chosen for their elegant appearance and functional utility with a focus directed at making the Chaparral series unique as well as a serious contender in the gents knife genre.
Lightweight and super sharp.Very classy spyderco. Thanks Blade HQ for another great knife experience!!
Why only 3 stars? I can't really justify the $161 that I spent on the knife. You can buy a standard Chaparral for $65 less if you want the same blade and handle lengths. Hey, I dig the mother-of-pearl moon inlay and the carbon fiber handle, don't get me wrong. I'm just not sure that it's worth $65 more. Also the wire clip just looks rather cheap against this quality version of the knife. Because the knife is rather small in my hand, it's somewhat alarming, or disconcerting, to thumb it open one-handed. The carbon fiber handle is slick and small and short in hand, meaning it's more likely for me to slip and cut myself even with added focus. And of course, the back lock is not meant to be used as a one-handed method for closing the knife. For the price, I recommend going with the slightly larger PM3 because it has the safer compression lock that can be operated with one hand. All that being said, the quality of this knife - blade steel, look and feel of the handle, is quality. My only problem is that it's too small for my hands and that I happen to own a PM3 which I can't help but compare it to. I actually prefer my Endura 4 to this as well and you can pick up and Endura for $85. Or just go PM3 lightweight for $98. Really, the only reason to buy this is for the handle variant. And/or because you collect Spyderco's many variations.
