In the 1990s Spyderco was approached by a specialized branch of U.S. law enforcement about making a knife for their undercover agents. These plain-clothes LEOs found themselves in situations where they often could not carry a firearm but carrying a knife was not a problem. Most had no formal training in self-defense tactics or MBC but as a last resort could use a blade to protect or extricate themselves from a life-threatening situation. This was how the Civilian model came to be.
The Civilian has a patented reverse "S" blade that's intended to be used like an oversized claw. The tip is ground to an ultra-thin profile. Deeply curved and full at the belly, the VG-10 hollow-ground blade excels in slicing and is available fully SpyderEdged. Because of its distinctly specialized features it is not intended or designed for general utility or everyday use. Curved in all the right places for ergonomic use and retention of the knife, the handle is black G-10. Mounted for tip-down carry with a custom curved black clip, the knife rides deeply and unobtrusively in a pocket. One of the most specialized CLIPITS in the Spyderco line-up, the Civilian is available in limited quantities.
Searching houses and looking for weapons andq the drugs in Iraq Was no easy task but this blade made quick work of any obstacles I may have placed in its way.
I have own my spyderco civilan for about 3 years now and not once I regret the price I paid for it. I use it everyday as part of my conceal Cary EDC. It's a big heavy but what that does for me is reassuring that is there and ready to use in case I have to protect myself or others. Planning to get myself a paramilitary 2 to keep in my car or get home bag but my civilian would always be by my side... I give this knive 5 out of 5 stars... AWESOME KNIVE !!!
This beast is beautiful! This product is highly suggested and should be cared for. Spyderco and Benchmade are my fine child. The Freek is definitely the next knife I would LOVE to have!
For starters, the packaging BladeHQ sent this knife in was amazing! Multiple layers, and securely sealed. As expected, this knife came in a great zippered case that will help protect your investment. Upon removing the knife from its case, the quality of this product becomes truly apparent. The construction is top notch, and it locks up like a rock. As always, the Spyderco G10 scales have a unique feel that can not be duplicated. The back-lock is easy to disengage, yet the design makes accidental activation nearly impossible. The blade opens smoothly and with authority, and has a very strong detent preventing it from coming open by accident. This knife's single SS liner is milled out, contributing significantly to its functional weight. This knife is designed for self defense, and will serve as a backup to my firearm (M&P 40). If you're looking for a defensive folder, this is definitely a great choice. If you're looking for an EDC/utility blade, go with a PM2/Manix2 instead. You won't find much utility value in this blade, but it just might save your life in an emergency. Overall rating: 10/10 Recommended? Yes BladeHQ did an amazing job, and I'd like to thank them for connecting me with this unique knife. Spyderco makes a great product, that I'd recommend to anyone serious about personal protection. FINAL NOTE: Because so many counterfeit knives are floating around these days, I recommend buying your blades ONLY from an authority Spyderco dealer (like BladeHQ). Believe me, the customer service and confidence in your purchase is well worth it. When you receive a genuine Spyderco product, you'll have no doubt of its quality.
This is the grail of my collection. Big, scary, and supremely well made, possibly my favorite model of all time.
I love the cutting power of this knife! Made only to cut meat! Says so on the paperwork.
I have one of the early ones with aluminum scales. It's been my primary EDC for most of 20 years. Easy and fast to open. Tends to scare the crap out of non-knife people when you flip it open. Saved my butt in a parking lot confrontation a few years ago. Big guy started coming at me with attitude till I pulled the civilian. He couldn't back peddle and apologize fast enough.
