I have wanted a Shaman for years and also wanted to experience Spyderco's M4. This knife was a perfect storm for me. It couldn't have been more centered or smooth, and the micarta is just warm and perfect in terms of grip. It was smoother out-of-the-box than any Spyderco I have owned except the Sage 5 LW...and it was still close. It's drop-shutty and ready for whatever I throw at it. I am super impressed with it and happy to own this knife!
If you are having shaman problems I feel bad for you, I have 99 problems but a bad shaman ain’t one!
Best all-around Spyderco yet! Not light duty, but carry well. Was a bit stiff open/close at first. Light knife oil and repeatedly opening/closing the blade solved that. Fits in hand good. I actually shaved a patch of leg hair, right out of the box. This is a well-designed excellent knife for EDC!
I have many Spydercos but this is my first Shaman. Like all Spydercos its razor sharp right out of the box. The Manix 2 is my favorite Spyderco, but I can definitely see why the Shaman is so popular.
Very happy with this one. Great action, lock up, and centering. Thank you BHQ!
This is a grail knife for me. I used to have the original g-10 shaman with serrated blade. It was so good but I had issues sharpening it and sold it. I have always regretted that until now. The standout thing for me is the scales. They feel so high quality and and perfectly contoured. Don’t sleep on this if they do a restock.
I have many spyderco and this is another fantastic knife from Sal! I’ve been waiting for the perfect shaman to come out and it finally did! Fit and finish is immaculate and I can confirm that it comes sharp considering I already managed to cut myself. I ordered this on Tuesday and it was in my mailbox on Friday, BHQ y’all rock!
Ordered mine the minute they dropped. Out the box everything is perfect. The blade would drop open and closed. The only thing I never read about is a little bit of the choil sits in front of the lock. That may be a concern for some . Thanks Blade HQ, always a pleasure.
Been wanting a shaman but waiting on sprint run to drop. Lucky after seemed like site was crashing I got one. Mine was perfectly centered and grind was 95% even. Scales are great! I own more than my share of spyderco’s, microtec’s and benchmades. I must say this is one well made knife!
Micarta scales look and feel great, blade centering is perfect, no side to side blade play of any kind, and the m4 blade arrived very sharp. Exactly what I was hoping for out of this shaman, couldn't be happier with this beautiful knife.
I kinda went backwards by ordering the knife and then reading reviews on it. It had me worried my knife would arrive with the issues others have stated but what's done is done. The blade is a big chunk of M4. I didn't realize how thicc this blade was till I opened the knife and saw it first hand. It's smooth and easy to flip open. The jimping is grippy but not sharp enough to hurt your thumb after use. The satin finish is nice and came razor sharp. The handle is what got me interested into buying this knife. I'm starting to love Micarta handles because of the feel of it and "patina". It doesn't feel like it will slip out your hands but it won't tear you up like some g10 handles I've had. The Micarta handles will show signs of wear but I think that's the cool part. I use my knives no matter how expensive they are. The 3 reasons I bought this knife (Spyderco, M4 and Micarta) didn't disappoint me. OK and the compression lock is also one of my favorites. One hand to open and close the knife effortlessly makes it a regular in my pocket.
This knife is great overall. I really like the feel of the Micarta scales (much better than the original G10). Only problem is that it's very off-center. This is the first Spyderco I've ever had that issue with. It's not the end of the world but it's not something I expect out of a $245 knife.
I was quickly able to fix the blade centering. Drops shut and feels solid as a vault. First go at an M4 blade and so far impressed. The only thing that dropped a star on this review were the scales. Mine are almost a flat dark brown and looks more like a g10 material. Checked unboxing reviews to compare and they all seemed to have a much lighter appearance and were much more like the image here. I must have got a lemon in regards to the scales, I was not expecting it to be vibrant green or anything but mine is simply a flat dull brown. Every other aspect of the knife is excellent though. Unfortunate side of ordering online I suppose!
Seriously for an exclusive run that is cost $245 this should have better QC. This is the second blade Hq exclusive that has come noticeably off-centered… not just a hair of but half a blade width off. Just expect better from Spyderco… these days it seems like just rolling the dice when buying their products. I feel the Taichung plant does a better job than the USA plant putting out their products these days… so much for American made.
I’ve been holding off on pulling the trigger on a Shaman until there was an announcement for M4 and Micarta. Purchased and received my order with a Knife with an amazing edge, Micarta is pristine. The big problem is that the blade is off-centered (favoring the right). I am able to recenter the blade but only by cranking down the right pivot screw which makes the knife useless because now you can’t even open it. So moving forward I’m going to keep the knife and try and break into the action.
As other reviewers have said, I think this was a rushed batch. I am a pretty big fan of Spyderco and I own another Shaman that I love; however, the QC on this one, especially at this price point, is pretty low. What I originally took as a very bad centering was, in fact, the pivot screws so lose the show side pivot screw nearly came out. There is very little to no thread locker on any screw. After tightening the pivot screws down I discovered that either I have to tighten them to the point that the blade is hard to open and close or the blade will have horizontal movement, with no middle ground. When I disassembled it to clean it, hoping this could fix it, I found the blade and liners completely dirty and gritty. In the end, I could make this serviceable, but not great. One of the very few disappointments I've had with Spyderco.
Wanted the Shaman every since I saw one, But when I saw CPM M4 and Micarta Scale I decided to get it even though the price is way more than I could spend on a knife. I do like the knife, but it came way off-center, I know this happens with micarta scale knives and can be fixed, but I don't feel like you should receive a brand new one this far-off center. Also, the Compression Lock is hard to access because of the part of the blade that fills the opening.
I own several Shamans and this one has the worst build quality of them all. There are scratches on one side of blade and a corrosion spot on the other. The blade grinds are uneven from the ricasso to tip as well as the clip vs show side. The blade is not centered. I asked Blade HQ to double check grind and centering before sending and they obviously didn’t. Update: I returned this example to Blade HQ who was great about setting up a return. I ordered a replacement and that one was also defective (blade was off center with poor action and a long scratch). Also returned under warranty. I give up on this run of the Shaman. Do better Spyderco.
I love Spyderco they are a great brand. I have two other sprint run Shamans that I love and are great. I think I got a bad egg or something. The blade centering is way off and could not be adjusted. Also there was a load of thread lock or something that was on the clip screws that I have not had encountered with not only Shamans but other knives by Spyderco. I am going to chalk this up to you can't win them all and move on with life. However at $245 price point I would want more QC and even on a sprint run.
My blade is off-center as well. Sounds pretty common on this run. Is it really possible to put this many knives together and not notice something that obvious?
Blade almost touches the show side liner. Many attempts to center, but no luck. I never expect perfect centering, but this is really bad. Overall, I am very disappointed and I will be extremely careful with Spyderco purchases going forward.
