The Southard’s handle combines a textured black G-10 scale and thick titanium liner on one side with a solid titanium scale on the other. The titanium scale forms the foundation of the knife’s sturdy Reeve Integral Lock (R.I.L.) mechanism and features a small inlaid G-10 panel that acts as an overtravel stop when releasing the lock mechanism. It is also home to the knife’s matching stainless steel clip, which supports right-side tip-up carry.

Offering an amazing synthesis of ergonomics, functionality, and state-of-the-art materials, the Southard is one of the most advanced Spyderco folders ever produced.

Brad Southard is an amazingly talented custom knifemaker who specializes in high-performance folder designs. His first collaboration with Spyderco features a “flipper”—a novel blade-opening device that was pioneered by custom knifemaker Kit Carson. A flipper consists of a small lever that extends from the base of the Southard’s CTS 204P hollow-ground blade and protrudes from the back of the knife’s handle when closed. Pulling on it with your index finger creates a tension against the detent mechanism that holds the blade closed. When the detent is overcome, the blade rotates on a special captive ball-bearing pivot system and snaps authoritatively into the open position.

Great Knife
Scott B. on Dec 31, 2015

I have somewhere in the neighborhood of a few hundred knives that I have collected over the years. This knife is in the top 5 easy. I was really impressed with the quality of the knife. Would highly recommend this knife!

Spyderco Southard...pure awesomeness
Robert G. on Apr 5, 2015

I just received this knife from BHQ after returning another similarly priced, higher end production knife that was a train wreck right out of the box. First, I've got to say that the customer service at BHQ is second to none. Thanks guys! Now, I got the all black Southard. It is absolutely spot-on, perfect right out of the box. Flips, well like its on bearings. Very smooth. Lock up is out of this world precise and strong. Blade play? Yeah, right...non existent. Perfectly centered and VERY sharp out of the box. Very light in the hand and perfectly balanced. Blade to handle ratio is almost 1:1, which is awesome, other than be careful to not get the tip of your finger knicked by the tip while ots.clipped in your pocket if you are like me and fidget with the knife in pocket. I went over this knife for the first couple hours i had it trying to find something, anything, out of whack fit and finish wise. I could find nothing, its 100% perfection! i had read that the G-10 used on the Southard was almost too grippy. Maybe on the brown scaled version, but not the black one, it is perfect. About the same abrasiveness as a Manix, maybe even a bit less than. My ONLY and i mean ONLY complaint about this knife is the pocket clip. Its very pointy, to the point that the thing WILL shred your pants and even injury you if you're not careful. Seriously guys, Im not kidding. Also, this pocket clip is bar none the tightest Ive ever seen. Ive already removed it, bent it open a bit so I can actually get it clipped to my pants and also rounded that wicked point some. Other than that, this knife is worth every penny it costs. The customer service that I personally received from the crew at Blade HQ regarding my you cannot put a price tag on. Best ever!

Great Knife!
John H. on Jan 20, 2018

Mine came perfect right out of the box, no problems flipping or with the lockbar like other people have been saying. Maybe I just got a particularly good example, I'm not sure, but I love this knife. I traded a Military model for this and love the size and the ergonomics of it much better. Only complaint would be the pocket clip really is too sharp on its edges and tends to want to stab into my pockets. Otherwise, fantastic knife I would recommend everyone, especially at the discounted price.

Great Spyderco

This is not my only Spyderco knife, I have a paramilitary 2 as well as a Manix. This is now my new favorite Spyderco.

Southard with the W
Tanner J. on Dec 24, 2017

Great components blending together to create an elegant design that is aesthetically pleasing. Careful with the clip, it is sharp and tight. I recommend beding it back to speed up the break in process. Excellent knife overall.

like it
Matthew J. on Jan 17, 2018

Good fit and finish and feels good in hand. Only issues would be the lack of steel insert on the lock bar, the handle with the g10 scale is thicker than the lock side, gimping could be more aggressive, pocket clip point is a bit sharp, and the flipper detent is a bit weak so if you don't follow through it will not fully deploy. Issues aside I like the knife

Great Knife Overall
JAY L. on Jan 9, 2018

I purchased the all black version even though I always prefer the satin or stonewash blades, now I wish I would have just ordered third party scales for the Satin version. With that being said its an awesome knife with few drawbacks. The bladeshape is very nice, action is great and lockup is nearly perfect. The hollow ground blade arrived very sharp. Now for the negatives. The knife is a little thick & not the most comfortable in hand unlike my very comfortable S90v Manix 2. The pocket clip is sharp but my biggest complaints are the lack of a stainless steel insert & jimping on the flipper!. I am still considering ordering replacement scales to hopefully deal with the thickness issue but the G10 is nice & not too grippy. I highly recommend the Southard knife but would appreciate if Spyderco would fix a few of the issues mentioned above.

Tim T. on Jan 23, 2018

I got one of these closeouts and it has mis-aligned jimping where the blade and handle line up, Just thought you all should know they said the rest of their stock also has the same issue. The knife feels great in hand, bit of lock stick but not too bad after wearing in. Clip is terrible but you can get some custom ones. Overall I like the knife but I just want to make sure everyone knows what they're buying before they order.

Lock Stick
Sam S. on Dec 6, 2017

I sure hope the R.I.L. breaks in, but out of the box, this thing doesn't flip to well, and when flipping with any effort at all, the titanium integral lock requires two hands to disengage. Love the design aesthetics, though.

Flipper isn't very smooth
Mark L. on Dec 12, 2017

This knife is fine. The looks are great. The blade is sharp and it is a useful cutting tool. The flipper doesn't fully open the knife so you either use the Spidey-hole or you flip the flipper and flick your wrist at the same time to open. It's thicker than expected but comfortable in hand. Probably a good deal at the BHQ discontinued product clearance pricing but would have been way out of line anywhere close to the MSRP. I have numerous Spyderco knives and this isn't their finest work.

Tyler G. on Jan 5, 2018

It's not smooth like my zero tolerance knives it's a decent knife but it's not very impressive

Discontinued Thankfully
Giovannni O. on Mar 18, 2018

I bought this knife when it was discounted, as there is no way I was going to pay $240 for what it is. Pros: - CTS 204P - Great Steel - Titanium Handle - F&F Cons: - Top, inside edges of the handle, are sharp (No chamfering) - The opening hole slightly difficult to reach (Can't even Spydie flick it with your middle finger) - Lockbar overtravel stop is useless (Lockbar is too stiff) - Pocket clip was the last minute decision that was slapped on and called good to go. (The pocket clip is very pointy and sharp, and also does not fit the knife design.) - Jimping is only there for aesthetic reasons, it's not functional in the slightest bit. - Lockbar cutout and pocket clip were designed to shred the pocket - Guaranteed lock stick and lousy action - Stainless Bearings and Detent Ball - Detent Ball is unhardened - I have to crank the pivot down 95% to get it to be centered - Spydie Hole is only accessible using your thumb. - Round Head Screws For the price of $240 originally, the knife should've had the following to make it worth $240: - Ceramic Detent & Bearings - Stainless lock insert - Better action - Spydie Hole accessible using your middle finger - Custom Milled Clip and the lock bar cutout on the inside of the frame - Chamfering on the inside - Flat Head Screws I don't see how Spyderco though they were going to charge $450 MSRP and $240 street for a $150 knife at best.
