Description

A really good hunting knife is probably the best field tool that any hunter can have, not just for dressing the animal, but for cutting cord and general use around the camp or in the field. A knife needs to be versatile and rugged, reliable and have a comfortable grip for extended yet comfortable use.

The TOPS White Fang is the culmination of months of testing and evaluation to come up with a great looking, well-functioning tool. Form meets function to do some real hard work in the field.

I've wanted a White Fang since the day I set eyes on it, but much to my dismay, it had been discontinued and it was sold out everywhere. I searched vigilantly over a long period of time, but I couldn't find one anywhere (not even second hand). I wondered why they had stopped producing this knife and came across discussion threads where other TOPS fans expressed great appreciation for it. I had finally all but given up on my hope of ever owning one, when I did a casual search for some TOPS products and found a lone listing for a brand new, unopened TOPS White Fang. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was even going for just a few bucks over the Blade HQ price at the time it was discontinued. I was skeptical. I ordered it. I was fully prepared to receive a convincing counterfeit, or a different knife all together, but when I got it, it was just as advertised. Naturally I was over the moon. This knife is beautiful, with a stainless blade that has an extreme sweep to it. The blade stock is very thick, and the full flat grind comes down to a very strong and perfectly ground secondary bevel. The antique paper micarta is gorgeous, and has the feel of a tacky wood that is warm and grippy. It is more of a worn yellow than a white, and the red liners are a fine touch for a little subtle color contrast. The blade is a bead blasted grey, which is a finish I have always really liked aesthetically speaking, and it eliminates any blade blink to a greater degree than even a typical stone washed finish. This is a tool above all else, and it's a capable and rugged one. It is not your typical edc fixed blade with feather light construction and a rigid sheath with a locking belt mount. This baby is thick in the blade, and full in the handle with a high quality brown leather sheath that is only set up for conventional vertical belt carry. It has an additional retention strap with a snap closure. I wanted to do this review for 2 reasons. #1. I wanted to brag about the fact that I was able to finally capture a personal grail knife that seems to be long gone, with zero presence on the secondary market (I don't blame people for not wanting to give one up), and #2. I heard a rumor that was recently confirmed by Craig at TOPS that this knife is going to have a second coming. I am not sure if they will simply start producing this knife exactly, or a White Fang 2 that is different. All I know is that there will be a new White Fang, and I was thrilled to hear it. If its different, I will certainly be picking it up, and if its the same, I suggest you pick one up. It is one stunning, bad A$$ knife!
