What constitutes an epic failure? In my opinion, it's a knife that should have been really good and isn't for the simple reason that bad design decisions were made. The Z200 is a textbook case. This knife has a really nicely made N690 blade with a really functional shape. The handle ergonomics are, at least for me. really good. It has a nicely designed unobtrusive deep carry wire pocket clip usable for left or right blade up carry. The handle is a bit squishy due to there being a thin liner only on the liner lock side, so the scales flex a some if you squeeze even a little bit.
All of that would be easily excusable on a low mid-price knife like the Z200. What isn't excusable is the fact that the knife isn't deployable at all one handed. It has a seemingly nicely designed thumb cut to flip it open, but the problem is the detent. The detent is so stiff that initially it was painful to try to open it two handed like a traditional slip joint. The second issue is the garbage plastic washers that the blade pivots on. Before I took it apart and lubed it with the supplied lubricant you couldn't even reliably flip it open once the detent was released even when the blade was loosened up to a point where it was wobbly when it was locked open. I now have it working to the point where I can flick it open after the detent is released, but this knife will never ever be a carry knife. I decided a long time ago to live with my mistakes, so now what should have been a knife I really liked will spend its life on my work bench a utility knife. It's a shame when a company that clearly knows how to make good component parts, turns a good knife into relative garbage just by cheaping out. A simple set of bearings and a reasonable closed detent and this knife would have gotten 5 stars from me. Acta Non Verba has a long way to go before they are living up to their name.
