Benchmade has scaled down their popular SOCP fixed blade for more convenient concealed carry with the 173BK Mini SOCP. This model is made from 440C stainless steel in a black powder-coated finish. Three finger grooves on either side of the handle and a kunai-style finger ring provide the grip dexterity needed for any good tactical knife.
A nice update to the SOCP with a smaller blade and profile. This makes it easier to carry discreetly. If you need to carry it against your body, it comes with a nice small leather guard which can be attached pretty easily. Since I carry mine in my pocket, I don't use it. The pocket clip has been changed and has a lip on it that catches well, even if the sheath moves up a bit when you are deploying the knife. The original had a tendency to pull completely out of the pocket when deploying. My only gripe is that its 440C - which is a completely serviceable and fine metal but for the price, they could have used something a little better. Overall, though, I would definitely recommend this for a quick deploying, discrete carry fixed blade.
Good knife never had a bad Benchmade and bladehq has great service.
This is a pretty good tool for self defense. I like it so far, but am still getting used to it. I am sure I will like it more down the road. I will use it as a back up weapon to whatever my primary weapon is.
The tip is ultra sharp. The blade down each side is dull. I have reached out for warranty assistance and sent all forms to BladeHQ. I plan on returning if no further help is provided. I have never received a brand new dull knife from Benchmade so am hoping this is a fluke. Amended 9/5/19: I had a long, very nice conversation with a Benchmade Customer Service representative. They acknowledged my concern about the blade edge and told me this was a conscious part of the design for the Mini-SOCP. The designer intended the dagger to be used only by plunging it point first to momentarily create space for the user to access their primary weapon. I shared that I was concerned that I might not have the luxury of a 90 degree/perpendicular plunge of the dagger tip and would appreciate any additional cutting the edges might produce. They made it available for me to try to sharpen it further or send it to Benchmade where they could touch it up as long as I realized it would never be like the shaving edges on many of their premier fixed, folding, and auto knives. I will carry it "as is" for now. The next batch I send to Benchmade for resharpening will include the Mini-SOCP. I was treated very well by both BladeHQ and Benchmade.
