They Really Fixed Everything

Everything I disliked about the plain small frame pilar was fixed in the CRKT Pilar Lg frame. Mediocre Steel? Boom D2. Slick and hard to grip? Pow sexy Black G-10. Can't open this darn knife? Kachow, flipper time. Way too small to do anything with? Hava extra half inch of steel to wrap your sausage hands around. Brings a tear to my eye when companies take improvement suggestions. The pilar has moved from inconvenient and obsolete, to a surefire keeper that has worked its way into my EDC rotation. 85/100

Been carrying the Pilarge for over a month now and have some thoughts. It is great for detail work on flat objects and paper. Being in law school I wanted something less tactical that wouldn't intimidate the notso knife friendly community and this fit the ticket. Only downside I have found is that the action is pretty stiff even after thorough cleaning and adjustment. Overall, tough and good looking knife from a great company.
Probably the last CRKT I buy (TBD)

Cons: The action is laughable out of the box. I know it's going to be tight but this is ridiculous. Centering is off. Grinds are sloppy. It's really heavy for a knife this size. Why even ship this Tip Down? If you compare this with a Bestech a Civivi or a Kizer it's a world of difference.

Pros: It arrived razor sharp. The Detent is super strong and I can only hope it will actually break in over time. Ergos feel perfect. I like my original Pilar but it just always felt a bit cramped in my hand.

Update: I tried adjusting the pivot screw but I still couldn't get it right so I just tightened it up so the blade was centered and figured I'd just let it break it. After a day or two it works pretty well, definitely not the smoothest knife in this price range (Bearings would do wonders) but it's perfectly serviceable. now.

I'm absolutely surprised at the quality I got for BHQ'S sale price + custom work. Smooth action that will turn buttery after some use...sanded the edges of the G-10, now VERY comfortable...unlocks very easy one-handed...switched to tip-up carry with T-6 torx bit (Loctite used from factory on 1 screw). Love the sheeps foot blade & its length...perfect! ***YOU MUST REMEMBER TO KEEP OILED/DRY! Learn the hobby of knives before writing bad product reviews. Like others have noted, the frame lock is initially so tight, it makes flipping the knife open almost impossible. I was able to solve this issue by manually pulling out on the frame lock several times to loosen its pressure against the side of the blade. Also, a small, well-timed flick of the wrist ensures that the blade opens fully into the locked position. While this issue was a bit disappointing, the positives of this knife definitely overshadow it. For one, I just can not get over the awesomeness of the aesthetic look of this blade. When you combine that with the black G-10 handle and the black finished D2 blade, this knife is definitely a winner in my book. It has easily moved to the top of my EDC rotation. Others have noted issues with finish, blade center and/or wobble. My knife has not exhibited any of these issues. Also, I wanted to move the clip since I prefer to carry the knife tip-up. I was able to do this with relative ease using a Craftsman (Professional Series) T6 screwdriver. Overall, this knife is solid from form to function, and I would highly recommend it. It was definitely the perfect early birthday gift to myself.

It just needs to break in a little. Itís very stiff and almost unable to use the flipper but I love the size and material. The fit and finish is really nice. Canít wait for it to break in a bit. And wish it came with a deep carry clip.

Love this knife. Itís a definite improvement from the original in all aspects. The flipper a big help, however the fact that I tried to unscrew the pocket clip and switch it from tip dow (Comes like that from the factory) to tip up and whether its a machine or person that does the tighteningv of the hardware tightened it down so hard that it stripped my bit and the screws in the process is a big turnoff for me. If I knew I was going to encounter this problem I wouldíve spent my 50$ on something else like the ďStatgear AususĒ in Brown Micarta. I still wouldíve gotten the D2 steel and less headache

I love the size, the shape, and the material, however my problem comes from the frame lock. The frame lock on my knife is equal to, if not just shorter than the handle, meaning it is difficult to close the knife.
I will look at returning it and reordering it in the future. Hopefully this issue is just with my knife.

It's more expensive, has a better blade material, you'd think it would be better all around. My original Pilar is finished much better than this D2 version. As others have noted the G10 is sharp, like I feel like I'm getting cut handling the handle sharp. The edge on the blade is like bur city. The finish on this knife is what I'd expect to find on a $5 bargain bin knife. I'm super disappointed in this knife out of the box. It gets 3 stars because I love the Pilar design and this version should be superior once it is cleaned up but it probably will not replace my current EDC which is the original Pilar despite it's smaller, inferior metal blade and it's heavier weight.
A little disappointing

I eagerly waited for this knife to be released and ordered one immediately once available. A little bit bigger, the addition of a flipper, and better steel. Why not pay a little more, since the original Pilar was a pretty cool little knife for the money and I already owned several of them and the quality has been good for the price point. Unfortunately, after owning the large frame version now for a while, I believe the quality of this knife to be lower. The copy I received already had chips in the black (paint?) on the stainless steel side of the handle and back spacer. I don't expect it to hold up very long under use. The black oxide finish on the blade seems much better. At the increased price I also don't get why CRKT made the decision to stick with the nylon washers. Come on, some of the very cheap imports at half this price are using phosphor bronze washers. Anyway, after tuning mine up I've managed to get the blade centered and have a smooth crisp deployment with new phosphor bronze washers.

I received this knife in the mail approx 5 days after shipped. I am very happy. With the new Pilar, I am very happy they decided to go with the G10 and D2, a nice little upgrade over standard CRKT materials. The G10 is perfect, good texture, but not too aggressive. Mine came perfectly centered, well oiled, with no blade play and tolerances were nicely dialed in. The frame lock edge was slightly chamfered and not nearly as sharp as my original Pilar was, which is nice. Based on the other reviews, it sounds like I got a gem. I love knives with multiple deployment methods and this one does not disappoint. The flipper was a little stiff the first few flips as to be expected with a new knife on teflon washers and G10 front scale. After a few dozen flips, it has settled in nicely and works fantastic. Overall, I am very happy with this new version of the Pilar. This one is going to stay in my pocket for a while. Thanks Blade HQ and CRKT!

As others have said, the flipper is not the greatest, but a really nice addition regardless. I wish they would have rounded off the edge of the G10 where the flipper is because it's a little sharp and it feels like you're cutting yourself, but you aren't.

I had the original Pilar, and I found the original to be a little tricky to open. I have large hands that get abnormally sweaty, so having to contort my fingers to reach the thumb hole was annoying and given the smooth finish, I was afraid it would fly out of my hands. With this large Pilar, it is a very good size, my fingers don't have to go through a contortion act to get to the thumb hole. The G10 gives you some extra grip.

D2 is very nice, I like the build quality, everything is nicely finished, no imperfections on any surface.

Well worth the money and this has quickly become my one of my favorite knives.

Just received it today. Knife was a little on dry side. After a few drops of oil and a small tweak on pivot screw it works well as a flipper. Other then the few adjustments I made I'm pleased with the knife. Blade was very sharp and blade centering was on point. I'm happy too put this knife in my rotation.

I already own a standard size Pilar, and Iíve liked it so much that I gave another as a gift. When the large size became available, I thought ď wow, I like the original... this one has D2 steel and a flipper, why not?Ē. (I didnít own a flipper knife and the novelty of this feature was a significant reason to justify the purchase.)

Upon receipt of the larger version, using the traditional thumb hole deployment, I was immediately
impressed that the blade rolled out like the original, but happily, the frame lock released smoother than the smaller version. Next I tried the flipper. No matter how hard Iíve tried to deploy the blade with the flipper, it wonít open beyond 60%. I noticed that the washers are a white polymer material, however, theyíre not the source of the excess friction. The friction comes from contact between the frame lock and blade. I hope the action wears in and the flipper will actually deploy the blade; if not, I will just have a larger Pilar with D2 steel thatís thumb-hole deployable, almost like a Spyderco. Thatís not bad, but itís not a flipper knife.

Update>>> the knife has worn in a bit and deploys easier. I can even flip it now if I use a bit of a wrist snap.
Nice Knife, OK Flipper with Work

Nice knife. Adequate size for my hands. Handle itself would normally not be big enough, but the large finger choil is what makes it work. Arrived plenty sharp. Works pretty well right off the bat with the thumb hole opener. Was almost impossible to use as a flipper. After some lubrication, a lot of tweaking on the pivot, and near obsessive levels of opening and closing it over several days, it finally works decently as a flipper. Nice enough, but if you're looking for a good flipper, this is not it.
