I’ve had this knife since being issued in the Marine Corp back in 2007. I still use this knife everyday. I had to replace the spring this year. I got a stronger spring now opens just as fast as any other auto. You can’t go wrong with this knife. After 14 years of every day use the blade as has withstood everything I have put it through.
I am a collector with a fondness for autos. The 06 is a n auto that has grown on me quickly. Are there snappier autos..Yep, I have them. Are there sleeker autos..Yep, I have them. Are there autos I am not afraid to use and abuse and happily carry, not in my collection. The 06 is built to work, yet has a feel and appeal that continues to grow on me.It truly has become my favorite EDC.
I was issued this by the US Army when I was in Afghanistan 2008 and it has been very dependable and kept its edge. The blade deploys well - not as fast as some other brands, but fractions of a second slower. The handle is comfortable and the knife is well built.
Took a couple of these on deployments. This is too big as a daily for me personally but its Great with gloves, great for heavier duty stuff. One of the best mid/large folders.
I read several reviews before ordering and was a little leery of ordering, but glad I did. It is a heavy duty, stand up to anything knife. It had a great edge on it and it opens fine in my opinion. True it's a little slower than some but that is to be expected with such a heavy blade. It has never failed to open or lockup. All around great knife.
The gerber 06 auto drop point came in today it was in pristine condition and will shave hair. This is my second 06 auto my first being a tanto blade. I cant recommend this knife highly enough. Very smooth and well built.. made in the good ol usa exelent knife for every day carry and self defense.
Had a lot of knives over the years, but this one is the only one I replaced with exact same one. No need for an upgrade, this one is it. Made in America for Americans by Americans. That says it all.
This is a great knife, I've carried it on occasion for some time now. This is a beast, very solid, somewhat heavy and it takes abuse. If the action were a little faster, I'd give it a five. The spring is solid but the blade moves fairly slowly... but it is a beefy blade to move.
This knife is a monster, in a good way. It takes abuse like nothing, and the big grip is comfortable for extended use. You'll feel it in your pocket for sure, but that's ok, it earns its keep.
As advertised but... No belt sheath as advertised. No big deal I guess so, change the listing. As others have noted, blade deployment is very sluggish. This is because of the heft - size & weight of the blade. The Tanto 06 snaps out but is half the heft of this one. If Gerber put a strong enough spring in this one to snap the blade out the unit would probably jump out of the hand or destroy itself over time.
Everything about this knife is outstanding, except the blade deploys veeerrrrrryyyyyy slowly. Reviews warned me but Gerber puts out such great products that I didn’t believe them. Hoping it improves as it gets broken in. Still, really disappointed.
This is the 4th or 5th auto knife I've had. After having it for only a couple of days, it's clearly well built, a great size, and has good weight to it. However, the deployment spring, while it does its job, it feels super weak. The opening action seems like its in slow-motion. As this is/was a military issued knife, I expected some sense of urgency when deploying the blade. If it wasn't for that issue, it's definitely a 5-star knife.
Blade deployment is slow implying a weak spring for the size of the blade. Press the button with assertiveness to get an almost appropriate blade response. Gerber seems to have an aversion to selling/supporting these knives to lowly simpleton civilians such as myself. This reminds me of how H&K does not seem to appreciate the lowly and untouchable civilian. The knive is nice enough that I will keep it... but just barely. If I opt to get another auto, I will go with a another spyderco. Blade deployment is outstanding. The gerber will most likely turn into a safe queen.
No power behind opening. More of a flop part way open. I was told it was do to the desire to be silent in the field when they are opened is why they don't snap open. Total BS.
I purchased this knife after i watched the video "the most prolific automatic knife ever." when i got the knife i first noticed that it was delivered without the sheath that it was supposed to come with. That was not a big deal to me as I don't use a sheath, but it was frustrating non the less. The real issue was the deployment of the blade. It was AWFUL! The blade would not deploy fully without a firm snap of my wrist. and occasionally it still wouldn't deploy fully even with a snap of the wrist. I was very disappointed with its function. Needless to say i returned it and purchased a spyderco paramilitary 2 instead. I am very pleased with the choice i made to switch knives. I would not recommended the gerber 06 auto.
