This Ayako features a green anodized aluminum front scale and a gray blade with a plain edge.
The Gerber Ayako is a Japanese-inspired folding knife. It has a modified standard style blade designed with Japan's iconic cutlery in mind. The blade is black oxide coated and can be opened via the thumb hole or front flipper. It is secured with a frame lock and includes a tip-down pocket clip for easy carry. Is this the "best" knife under $30? No, probably not, but is it the most unique? Yes, definitely a point I would argue. For me it was just one of those knives you open the box and go "damn, that's pretty cool". It's solid.
I like everything about this knife - the looks of the blade, the tip, and the handle but has a couple issues. First, it's kind of stiff and doesn't flip out as easily as other knives. Second, the handle isn't recessed enough to expose the thumb opening to move the blade out. This is more a 3.5 than a 4 star rating.
This knife has a nice look. Great knife for the price. Feels solid. I like the Green color. Not overly sharp out of the box but that should be easily fixed.
