Description

Description

This Native 5 has a lightweight black FRN handle and a full-flat ground, black DLC coated premium stainles steel blade with a plain edge. The handle on the Native is patterned with two separate finger choils. The first choil, where the blade and handle meet, allow positioning the index finger closer to the knife's sharpened edge for control over the cutting surface. Behind the first choil, the second positions the hand farther back on the folder for dexterous cutting while pushing the blade away from you. Bi-Directional Texturing molded into the FRN handle form varying levels of steps minimizing forward or backward sliding. 4-way reversible pocket clip for ambidextrous carry.

Good lock back design with a usable steel in a lightweight frame. The plastic handles are thick and sturdy enough to beat on without much worry. The lock is strong and easy to open and close. The blade is a good shape with a nice point and a wicked edge. Iwould say the only knock for this knife would be the weird pocket clip. Otherwise I would only mention that this is a type of knife that is only comfortable the use in one type of grip. The forward holding "saber" grip. It locks your hand in but if you like knives with a more flowing and grippable in all ways type of deal, this ain't it chief. Just my opinion.
Nothing else matters

There is nothing that can beat this. From the amazing steel you get for the money to the stares of jealousy, you cannot go wrong with the native 5. This has jumped up to my favorite carry knife.
Seriously lightweight

This Native 5 Lightweight in black is a beautiful piece of work from Golden, CO, USA, Earth. Itís got the best ergonomics of any small to medium EDC knife in my collection. If youíre a fan of forward finger choils like on the Dragonfly 2 or PM2 youíll find the same comfortable grip in the Native 5 LW. The DLC black coating on the blade AND the lockbar is smooth and clean, really subdues the appearance of the knife. The S35VN blade steel is great, Iíve had no trouble keeping it hair-popping sharp with the Sharpmaker diamond rods and a leather strop. Overall deployment is a little stiff out of the box as is closing, but itís still very easy to use one-handed. It has loosened up a little with use so Iím sure as time goes on it will become as smooth as any backlock Spyderco.

My only complaint is the clip: Spyderco, please make deep carry clips your standard practice. The Native 5 LW using the factory clip hangs out a good 1/3 to 1/2 inch above the pocket. I rectified this with a deep carry clip from another supplier but that adds $20+ to the go price and it would be an easy issue to fix (after all, Benchmade seems to have figured it out).

Overall I have to rate the Native 5 LW as a highly competitive option. If I compare it to a similar popular medium knife, the Mini-Griptilian, the Native 5 LW wins on steel, ergonomics, and slicing ability. If you donít mind a high carry knife and like finger choils, this knife should be on your list today. Order one now, and use BladeHQ for great service and fast shipping.
