Description

Description

Chances are you've heard it said "a sharp knife is safer than a dull one". We believe this quote originated from first hand experience and find it to be true. The Sharpmaker was Spyderco's first product, which they made and sold before getting into the knife business.

The Tri-Angle Sharpmaker (204MF) includes two sets of high alumina ceramic stones: A pair of medium-grit (brown) stones for aggressive sharpening and a set of fine (white) stones for professional grade finishing. The stones are triangular for sharpening Plainedges on the flat sides and SpyderEdges (serrations) on the corners. A furrow running the length of each stone lets you sharpen pointed items like fishhooks, darts and awls. Included is a set of brass safety rods protecting the users hands while sharpening. All components snap into the self-contained ABS plastic base and lid -- ready to travel with you. Die-cut into the base are keyed slots and holes fitted for the stones. They accurately set the stone's sharpening angle at a 30° (15° each side) or 40° (20° each side) for knives and a 12.5° scissor setting. Turn the base over, a channel lets you lay two stones side-by-side (flat-side up) for use as a benchstone. The lid snaps halfway over the base creating a handhold for stability while you're sharpening. Included is a set of brass safety rods to protect the users hands while sharpening.

Ceramic stones, like glass, will break if dropped -- handle carefully. Use them dry, without oil, water or lubricants. To clean: scrub stones with a plastic scouring pad and powered abrasive cleaner, let air-dry. Also autoclave safe. System comes with instruction book and DVD.

My older brother has a much older version of this Spyderco sharpmaker. He has had it quite a while. I have several sharpeners, but this is my go to sharpener, along with a leather strop. It is portable and convenient and it keeps my work knives "work" sharp. Good value. Easy to get the hang of it.

Great For Sharpening, Not Setting Angles

Use this for knives that need to be slightly restored, and you will have the best system on the market. If you need specific angles beyond the 30 degree back bevel, and 40 degree edge, look at a different investment. However, for regular use, this is perfect and works stellar! Ultrafine stones make this an edge finisher.

Better rods work better than the Lanksy turnbox, and gets crazy sharp edges on quality steels.

I had a 20yr-old pair of crock sticks prior, so with that experience & this system's reputation, it was the obvious choice (and price wasn't bad). The DVD is a good starting point, but w/ a lot of practice, and a little extra research, you can do so much more. The included stones will take a dull edge & make it a strong utility edge, that may even pop a few arm hairs. The triangular shaped rods are also very handy on serrated and recurved blades. The extra-fine stones (separate purchase) will take many steels to a near mirror polish on a very sharp and durable edge. If you have a broken tip to repair, an abused edge, or freakishly hard super steel, you'll want the diamond rods (separate purchase) or else you'll spend hours just working the included medium stones.
I'd give this 5 stars if it also came w/ the extra fine stones and diamond rods. IMO, its incomplete w/out those add'l purchases. That said, with those items, its a fairly comprehensive system, and is the only sharpener I trust on expensive mid-tech and custom knives.

Great sharpening kit, stores inside it's own shell and easy enough to teach almost anyone how to use.
Great balance

Between price and capability this sharpening system is one of the best. Do not expect to be able to do major repair work with only stock stones. Do not expect a mirror edge either even with the UF stones. You’ll get close but still. Always be sure to mark your edge. Slight variations in angles can ruin the edge you worked on. Be sure to strip your blade to further hone the edge.
Great set up

I had been looking for a easy to use knife sharpening kit and took a chance based off the reviews here. I was not disappointed in a little over an hour I put my edc knives and our kitchen back in order. Don't think it would straighten out a heavily damaged blade but if your knives are in relatively good shape just dulled this what your looking for.

Sure there are some better knife sharpeners out there but all it takes is 30 seconds with this in anyone can put an sharp edge on their knives. 440 Sv30 s35vn D2 Lmax this beast will do it all. The best thing about it is the price I dare you to find a sharpener that can do the same for less.
Great!!

I have an edge pro and typically finish with the 1000 grit stone. If I had to choose one sharpener this one by Spyderco would be it. It takes zero skill to get a knife shave sharp.

It's so easy you half expect the knife to be dull when you're done because it must be a gimmick or something. Fast and sloppy or slow and careful it just doesn't seem to matter.
