A good automatic knife can make life a whole lot easier.

They offer all the convenience and ease-of-carry you get from a conventional folder, but also bring the following benefits:

  • Fast, one-hand opening
  • Extremely reliable deployment
  • Some serious cool factor

If you’re reading this, I’ll assume you’re in the market for an automatic or switchblade knife, and odds are good you’ve realized there are hundreds of options.

Hundreds of options can be overwhelming.

To make things more manageable, we’ve curated a list of the best automatic knives in each category.

We chose these knives because many of us at Blade HQ have owned and used one or more of them and can vouch for their quality; additionally, the number of times we’ve needed to restock them is a testament to how often you choose them over the competition.

Without further delay, we present the best automatic knives of 2026!

Best Automatic Knives

Best All-Around: Kershaw Launch Iridium

The Kershaw Launch Iridium is an automatic take on the hugely popular Iridium Dura-Lock knife.

The "Launch" part of it name comes from Kershaw’s USA-made line of automatic knives, which are widely recognized as really, really great.

Naturally, when you combine two fantastic knife concepts, you get a real banger.

The Launch Iridium is as useful for EDC (everyday carry) as the original, but boasts the hard-hitting action of the Launch series, premium American construction, and the reliability that only comes from autos.

It wins the spot for Best Overall because it qualifies for every spot on this list (except the OTF one, fine).

Best Budget: Boker Kalashnikov Auto

If you combine all its dozens of variations in color, size, blade shape, finish, steel, etc., the Boker Kalashnikov is probably the best-selling knife in Blade HQ history.

And for good reason.

Boker set out to make the Kalashnikov auto much like its rifle namesake: strong, tactical, affordable, and nigh on indestructible.

It’s just as rugged and durable as any other knife on this list, and as mentioned earlier, it comes in so many variations that you’re virtually guaranteed to find one you love.

If you’re on a tight budget, there is no better place to start your automatic knife journey than the Boker Kalashnikov auto!

Best Military/Police: Microtech Socom Elite

If you need your knife fast, it doesn’t get much faster than a Microtech Socom Elite.

Violating the norms of knife design, the Socom uses a tip-down pocket clip, so when you pull the knife from your pocket, your thumb is already positioned on the knurled, oversized button, ready to rock and roll.

The button spring is also a bit stronger than average, making for lighting-fast blade deployment and dependable lockup—you’ll be hard-pressed to cause a misfire!

Once its open, it’s a big, overbuilt tank of a knife that can handle anything.

Best Stiletto-Style: Pro-Tech Godson

Just like the classic Italian stilettos, the Pro-Tech Godfather has a rectangular "coffin" handle, snappy automatic action, and a needle-like point for insane piercing power.

If you really want to lean into the style, you can get one of the custom models: Many have Damascus blades, professional engraving, inlays made of exotic woods, and even some crazy materials like mastodon ivory.

That’s pretty gangster!

Best Everyday Carry (EDC): Kershaw Launch 4

The Kershaw Launch 4 is another entry in the Launch series, and it’s easily one of the most popular!

One reason for its fame is no doubt is shorter blade, coming in just shy of two inches.

Why does that matter? It makes the knife legal in California despite being an automatic knife! (Always check your local laws!)

It’s virtues don’t stop there, of course: It has a razor-sharp CPM 154 steel blade, a machined aluminum handle, and it’s made in the USA.

Many people prefer a smaller knife for EDC. Small knives take up less pocket space, are unintimidating, and don’t have more blade than you need.

And compared to your stereotypical all-black, oversized tactical switchblade, the Launch 4 is positively cute!

Best Out-the-Front (OTF): Kershaw Livewire

The Kershaw Livewire is a full-sized OTF (out the front) automatic knife built for the everyman.

The knife is renowned for its smooth, easy actuation and consistent firing/retraction.

Made in the USA, it’s built from premium aluminum and CPM MagnaCut steel and comes in a variety of colors.

Whether for tactical use, EDC, or simply to fidget with, you’ll find the Livewire lives up to the hype!

Best Outdoor: Buck 112 Ranger Auto

The perks of an automatic knife are as useful in the forest as they are anywhere else.

Whether you’re laying a fire, skinning a moose, or doing other forest things, you often have your hands full, and easy one-hand opening is a boon.

If you spend time outdoors, the Buck 112 Ranger Auto is that boon!

It’s just like the manual 110 Folding Hunter, the legendary knife that has dominated the great American outdoors for the better part of a century, but is a bit smaller and snaps open easily with the push of a button.

It’s smaller size also makes it a stellar EDC knife, whether or not you frequent the woods.

It’s the natural questions when you’re thinking of buying one: switchblade/automatic knives are often the subject of legal scrutiny.

To help answer you question, we recommend you check out the article we wrote on the subject, familiarize yourself with your local laws, and seek legal advice from a professional.

But don’t let that dissuade you from these knives! They’re more widely legal than you might think (in the USA, anyway).

Why Buy a Switchblade Knife?

Automatic knives offer another layer of security. When it comes to manual folders, at the end of the day, you’re counting on your fine motor skills to open the knife.

In emergencies, hands shake, attention is divided, details are missed; when seconds count, you might rather have a knife that can open at the press of a button.

Even in everyday situations, one hand is often already busy when we reach for a knife. Being able to open it with the other makes the job easier. (Though, it’s worth noting, with practice, many pocket knives can be operated one-handed.)

Automatic knives might not be for everyone. Legality and personal preference might make you prefer a manual pocket knife or even a fixed blade.

Either way, we hope you learned about these awesome automatic knives!
